Default Can the LS1 ECU & harness be used to run other engines?

Can you use the LS1 harness and ECU on other engines? I'm specifically referring to the small block Ford engine. I'd like to run a blown 302 with it. The EEC-IV isn't cutting it, and the EEC-V is even worse. It would seem as though LS1-Edit makes for a system nearly as tuneable as a FAST for less than half the money. I would use a 5.0 Explorer cam sync sensor for input, and run a LS1 crank wheel sandwiched between the balancer and serpentine pulley like a crank trigger. I'd use stock coil packs rewired to accomodate the Ford firing order, the same as the injector harness. What else will it take?

As long as you get the correct signale to the PCM, there is no reasone why it shouldn't work. The only thing I might do dofferantly is the cam amd crank signals. See if they make an aftermarket distributer that supplies both of them, like they do for the chevy motors. You could still use the coil packs.

have you considered Megasquirt? offers on the fly tuning, very affordable too. Works with just about ANY stock crank signal. built in 2.5 bar map sensor. unlimited ability.

No reason it couldn't, as long as you can setup all of the correct sensors.. Crank and Cam would be the biggies.. going to a SD tune might also help.

Using Coil on plug would be nice, doing the correct Throttle Body with the TPS and the IAC.

I've heard of TPI 3rd gen guys running LS1 computers, using a crank trigger and distributor from a some bastard vortec 5.7 van engine.

yes, you can do this. a friend of mine has a twin turbo ford fairlane with a 5.o Ford. he wired in an ls series computer from a pick up, and made it work using a speed density tune with hp tuners software. the wiring was a bit involved to synch up the cam and crank sensor with the ford firing order which is different from the chevy. he did use the gm crank sensor and trigger wheel mounted between the block and the balancer...

good luck

the 5.0, 5.8 EFI fords have same firing order as LSx. IF you number a LSx like ford numbers the cylinders.

FORD numbers 1,2,3,4 on passenger bank, 5,6,7,8 on drivers bank. (front to rear) LSx is 1,3,5,7 drivers, and 2,4,6,8 passenger. (front to rear)

Number them the same = same firing order. So there should not be any issues with fuel trims bank to bank.

This is not true...the firing order on a 5.0 or 5.8 is 13726548 and the firing order on an LSx is 18726543...only difference is the 3 and 8 are switched but because the cylinders are numbered differently none are the same..I am also interested to know if this will work though as i would like to do it on the 408 in my mustang.

You are correct with the exception of one thing. There is an HO firing order of 1,3,7,2,6,5,4,8. Different still but it sounds like a cool project.

Look at it this way, the computer has no sence of sight so it does not know what it is looking at. There is a few things you need to consider here. Firing order and the crank is only a part of it. Sync the injectors with the firing order and there are a few other things but long and short of it is, the air ratio coming in must match the percentages of the exhaust. Since they are both v-8s and you can sync the crank to the injectors, it should work.

yes the 5.0 HO and the 5.8/351 share the same firing order which is 13726548 as you stated...switching the coils and injectors around will not be a big deal i dont think...syncing the crank sensor to the injectors is going to be the hard part I think...but also what do you do with the distributor? there has to be something there to turn the oil pump so would you just leave the distributor in there with no wires on it or what?

Actually, busta9876 is absolutely correct. We figured this out in class one afternoon while I was still a student @ SAM. I also just went over it again on a piece of paper just to be sure my memory hadn't failed me and it definitely works out. Like busta said you must renumber the cylinders. Either the Ford like the LS1 or vice versa.
