If the input-shaft is bent it could easily impact the way the clutch releases (the disc is likely hanging up as a result). If the slave has nothing to contact to limit its travel it will generally extend fully. It may require pumping the pedal a bit, especially if the fluid is aerated...but be careful that you don't over-extend the slave because then you are going to be replacing it whether you want to or not.
