Default License Question (Illinois)

Ok, so I turned 21 yesterday. I went to Bdubs, bought a drink, no problem. Went to dinner with my family at Cheeseburger in Paradise. I bought 2 drinks there. Some of my sisters friends show up and they wanna do a shot with me at the bar. I go to the bar, and he asks for my ID. I give him my license and he said he can't serve me because its not valid. I have the old style state license. My license doesn't expire until 11-5-09, so how the hell is it not valid? He told me because it still has the red bars on top he can't serve me, it has to be the blue bars. I was like dude, I already had 2 drinks here, how is it not valid. He's like let me go ask my manager. He comes back and said he still can't serve me and then he wanted the servers name that served me. I didn't wanna get the girl in trouble, so I didn't tell him. This doesn't make sense to me. All my friends went out with the same license, no problem, waited til their renewal date and then got it done. That would be retarded if I can't drink because of the red bars. The damn thing is valid for 3 more months. Is it a state law or not? How are u supposed to drink on ur 21st bday if u still have that license? No one wants to go to the DMV on their birthday.
