| Modified models: Mecham - Mecham DKM Macho Trans Am (1976-1980) (Production numbers for 1976 was approximately 26, 1977 there were 200. In 1978 the Macho Turbo deputed on the Pontiac 400. Only 8 T/A's were equipped with the Turbo. The first was number 69 and the last was 202. In 1979 200 were built, number of Macho Turbo's were 22. 1980 just a few Macho Turbos were built, they has a slightly different paint scheme and "Macho Turbo" identification was placed just below the side windows and not on the rocker panel. In 1977, Dennis and Kyle Mecham turned out a limited series of grand touring Trans Ams that they dubbed the "Macho T/A". These cars were sold through their father's Pontiac dealership and moved unhaltingly out the door. Due to the success of their pilot year, DKM Design, Performance, Inc. was formed in 1978 and the program was expanded to over 200 cars which were made available to other Pontiac Dealers. Another 200+ cars were rolled out during the 1979 model year while the Pontiac 400 engine was still in vogue. DKM stands for Dennis and Kyle Mecham who worked at their father's Pontiac dealership in Glendale, AZ (Mecham Pontiac). In 1977, DKM started modifying stock Trans Ams which were sold to other Pontiac dealerships around the US. These "Macho T/A's" start out as factory Trans Am with the high performance engine/suspension package and custom cloth interior. The car got special DKM paint, accents, and graphics (including a console plate and MACHO T/A rocker panel and rear spoiler decals). Each car is uniquely numbered on the console plate, front fender, and rear spoiler. A "Plain Jane" version was available with just colored paint accents, no large MACHO T/A on the rocker panel, or Trans Am decals. The "bird" on the hood was either a full-hood style or smaller style (like that of early 70's) on the nose. An aftermarket model made big news in 1978, the "Macho T/A" by DKM. Available in various states of improvements, a reported 202 were built in 1978. The cars were all sold to DKM by Pontiac dealers and in turn sold back to Pontiac dealers as used cars. Dennis Mecham reported to the TachRev webmaster at the Trans Am Nationals the little known fact that 204 1978 Macho Trans Am's were actually produced - The 2 additonal were new cars purchased by owners and sent to Mecham DKM for conversion and not previously listed in the original Macho production count.)
- MR MSE Trans Am (1982-1985) (These cars were created from '82 - '85 by Dennis Mecham, of DKM Macho T/A fame. He started Mecham Racing Inc. (MR) located in Glendale AZ and Tacoma WA. MSE stood for Motor Sports Edition. The '82 models were a two tone paint scheme (split just below the doors at the rocker panel) with several colors combos to choose from. The '83, '84, and '85 models were painted similar to the 1984 15th Anniversary Trans Am with a two tone paint scheme split at the bodyline or middle of the doors. MSEs got a full width front spoiler, a low resistance "aerotail" rear spoiler, and emblems proclaiming it a Mecham Racing Machine. On the sail panels behind the doors are either MSE emblems or a big olive branch-wreathed letters MR, with Mecham Racing, USA, and SCCA champions underneath. There may be additional numbers/emblems on the drivers side headlight door, fenders, rear spoiler, or rear bumper depending on the year. MSEs also got special MR centercaps and a MR hood emblem. 500 were built in '82, 150 in '83, 50 in '84, and only a few in '85.)
- Macho Trans Am (1985) (Macho Trans Am's were mostly built by DKM from 1978 to 1980 (see the 2nd Generation section for more details). But in addition to the MR MSE Trans Ams built in 1985, only 20 Macho T/A's were also built. They had either a large MACHO T/A on the lower doors or a smaller "Macho" decal on the doors and the front and rear bumpers. These were also numbered like the 2nd gen Machos and MR MSEs. All other modifications were similar to the MSEs.)
- 20th Anniversary Macho Trans Am (1997) (Dennis and Kyle Mecham, of 2nd and 3rd gen Macho Trans Am fame, make a new Macho T/A available in three stages: Basic, HO, and SD packages. The Basic package included a Mecham-designed rear wing, new fiberglass hood, and painted-on Macho graphics including a unique hood bird. Power modifications include the same bolt-on parts as the Firehawks (315 HP) and was priced around $30,000. The HO package included the Basic upgrades in addition to a cam and head upgrade, raising power to around 400 HP and was priced around $42,000. The SD package included the Basic and HO upgrades in addition to larger/wider wheels, upgraded brakes, and a bored and stroked engine producing up to 500 HP. A wide choice of options was available for the SD and was priced around $60,000 (depending on options). The Macho T/A's were produced at the same location (Glendale, AZ) as the originals of the late-70's and early 80's, although the name had changed from Mecham Pontiac to Biddulph Pontiac. The first three prototypes of the above packages were built, with up to 20 being built in total - apparently only 14 were actually completed.)
- Mecham Formula and Trans Am (1998-2002) (There were 28 Mecham cars built in 1998 (probably 14 TAs and 14 Formulas), 2002 had 6 TAs and "only a few" Formulas, and there were about 20 in each of the other years. The Mecham T/A and Formula are Mecham's top Grand Touring creations. In standard form the Mecham T/A and Formula performance levels are elevated in every category: Improved handling, quicker acceleration, effective aerodynamics, and striking appearance. If you want more, the Mecham T/A and Formula have an extensive list of options that provide you the ability to further enhance and individualize your vehicle's appearance and performance capabilities. Once the equipment and appearance decisions are made, each Mecham T/A or Formula is series numbered and fully documented.)
- Mecham Firebird GTR (1998-2002) (The GTR was designed to compete favorably with the factory WS6 Trans Am and SLP Firehawk. From the fully functional extractor hood and high down force wing, to the exhaust and ram air enhancements, the GTR provides both stunning appearance and excellent performance at an outstanding price. The GTR package also provides a series number, graphics, and dash plaque to mark its place as a Mecham Design, Performance registered series car.)
