Default Identifying a LQ9......hopefully not a LQ4.

Hey guys. Just bought a (hopefully) LQ9 6.0L that is apparently out of a '05 Escalade. I have searched all over and checked every number i can find on the block and heads, but i can't find anything that will tell me whether it is a LQ9 or LQ4. This motor will be going into my 1976 Chevelle with a 4L60E behind it. Any help is appreciated.

If it came out of an Escalade, it's an LQ9

I can't really verify it though. I'm kind of just taking his word for it. I was hoping there was a way to tell for sure.

You can tell by the VIN. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GM_VIN_codes

Casting numbers on the head should be the same between LQ4 and 9 right? 317? The pistons are the compression ratio changer (for the lack of a better term)

I wouldn't take this as gospel, but I've read that if the piston tops (when at TDC) are roughly flush or level with the block, then it's the LQ9. If they're dished/recessed a bit, then it's the LQ4. (Of course, that means you'd likely have to pull a head...)

Don't know that I'd worry too much about it, since it's only a half-point of compression - but then again, if it was sold as an LQ9, it should be an LQ9. Good luck.

I'm getting a 6.0 out of a 2002 3/4 ton truck. Which would this be, a LQ4 or LQ9 and what is really the difference in the two. I'm going to be doing an LS1 Mustang swap. Thanks

I thought the lq4 had 317 castings and the lq9 has 319 castings?

Unless I was being dumb, I tried to look into the the cylinder through the plug hole last weekend of my LQ4 and could'nt make out the top of the piston. I did see the piston, but could not decypher which part i was seeing, im assuming it was the top, but being covered in carbon I couldnt make out the dish.

You could try sliding a piece of solder into the sparkplug hole and slide it across the top of the piston over to the cylinder wall to see if you feel a raised edge.

I'm not really worried about which it is. More that i got what i paid for. I'll pull some plugs and take a look, see if i can figure it out that way. It does have 317 heads.

The only real difference is the compression and 20 HP.
