Default DETAIL: '99 Black Viper GTS w/PC 7424 XP video highlights

This summer my nephew has wanted to learn more about the buffing and detailing process. I gave him an opportunity to learn on this '99 Viper GTS in order to understand how much goes into removing the fine scratches from the exterior surface.

The usual brake dust and road film:

I had him start on cleaning the wheels and wheel wells first with the spoke and longer handle white tampico bristle brushes before we started on the rest of the car.

Starting with our citrus based car wash concentrate, we lightly rinsed the surface first before swabbing to remove all remaining dirt, grease, road film and old wax.

After the first wash/rinse, I removed any surface contamination using the gray mild Clay Magic bar and our regular car wash solution as my surface lubrication.

Default Part 2

Now that the clay bar has been finished, we can rinse and dry to see what correction we will be facing. I did a quick test section for results before proceeding with today's treatment.

Here's a glimpse of the action with the New Porter Cable 7424 XP buffer using the orange LC CCS foam pad/Menzerrna SIP at speed 5-6. Now with a stronger, smoother 4.5 amp motor and 800 more orbits/minute at the top end. This machine can now spin to 6800 OPM for even more effective results while still being safe and user friendly for all experience levels:

As we wrapped up today's treatment, here's a couple of quick pics for this project:

We used both the orange and purple LC foamed wool pads throughout the car. Once we finished using the SIP, I stepped down to the Menzerna PO 106FA "Super Finish" and black pad to eliminate any micro-marring or polishing haze. For today's LSP, an application of our TC-2B "Crystal Black" Carnauba Creme and blue LC final finishing pad. Tire dressing done with our water based TC-15 "White Pearl" Tire/Trim Dressing.

Questions/comments welcomed.

Very nice steve. That black looks awesome. I love your tire shine it gives the tire a nice new tire look without attracting dust.

Nice detail. How are the foam wool pads treatin' ya? I've never used one but I like the results I see hear. Is it really necessary to get that aggressive?

Nacho:

I like the quick response of the purple foamed wool pads for removing the fine/moderate scratches. Cuts like a wool pad without the damaging effects according to the manuifacturer. Any micro-marring or hazing inflicted by them can be removed with a softer pad/product combo. Usually I'll begin with the least aggressive combo until I need to step up to something stronger. This surface had a lot of abused areas.

dabest09:

This machine is very safe and friendly for all users. It will not burn the paint or clear coat. With its short learning curve, you would become very comfortable with its ability in no time.

Thanks for the early responses.

Awesome work!
Are you supposed to apply pressure to the buffer?

As always, nice work. Are you saying that the PC 7424 has a new model, or upgraded it recently? Mine is 3-4 years old, and still kicking, but I always am on the lookout for the latest and greatest.

I might step up to the flex when I actually start to have more free time in my life to get back to polishing cars.

Don't worry I used the FLEX too while my nephew was learning how to use the new PC.

The new PC is model 7424 XP. New longer and more narrow housing, relocated speed dial, larger more protected on-off switch with more powerful4.5 amp motor. Top speed has been bumped up to 6800 OPM from 6000.

If you are using more than 5-10 pounds of downward pressure during use, it is better to step up to a more aggreessive pad/product combo if you trying to get your desired result.

We only have the clay bar in the kit with the lube at this time. Now, you can buy 3 of them

Yes the PC has been updated. Mine is about 5 years old (500+ cars) and still going strong. I picked up the Flex a few months ago. Its amazing how fast the Flex with the purple pad can clean up the paint.

My ability to detail cars has been dramatically reduced with 2 kids under 3 years of age... one day I'll get back into it.
