Default Side molding removal write-up

Well I removed the side molding on my '01 Trans Am a pretty good while ago an took plenty of pics. Now that I know how to place pics on here I figured I'd do a little write up for any one that might be interested. And yes I do realize that some one probably alredy did do a write-up one this but, here goes.

First your gonna need:
-Shop towels
-DSR Decal & Sticker remover
-razor blade(seizers)
-fishing string
-hair dryer

First decide where you're gonna start and spray a libral amount of DSR decal remover on the first piece of molding and allow it to soak for 2 to 3 minutes. Then cut off a piece of fishing string about 2 feet(or whatever works for you)Slip it behind the molding and begin pulling it along the side of the car. You're gonna want to wrap the string around your hands so be warned, it will be alittle painful, don't be a wuss.

Once you get the piece of molding off, the only thing that will be left is the glue.

Now you're gonna want to take the blow dryer and heat the glue strip slowly. Its not hard. As it heats you can just roll it up in a ball with your fingers and it comes right off.

Then just move on to your next piece and enjoy. Take your time. Its worth it. If you want to remove the embles too its the same way.

I hope this answers any questions anyone may have. It doesn't take long and it really makes the car flow alot better personally. This is the final project.

What was the razorblade used for? I didn't see anywhere that you stated you used it unless you were using it merely to cut your fishing string. (Or maybe I just don't know something everyone else already does )

When I did this to mine I got ahold of the molding and pulled on it at nearly a 90 degree angle straight down. The tape and glue for the majority came with the molding and saved me the dreaded blister on the thumb from rubbing at the glue. Just a tip that may save someone some time.

lol, i think you are right, it was used for cutting the string most likely! haha, but don't be a wuss just bite it with your teeth and pull... jk 01T/A88IROC-Z but nice write up and demolding your T/A made it look even more sexier than before! i think the demolding gives the T/A's a more flowing look than when you demold a Camaro. that's why i think i'll be keeping my molding on for now.

yeah I forgot to say that. The razor blade was simply for cutting the fishing string, sorry, and once you let the DSR soak a few minutes it pulls right through the glue quickly and softens it for coming off when you roll it. I didn't get any blisters when I rolled it. The DSR and the blowdryer made it come off quick and painlessly.

I just did mine, but I still have a nasty black residue left on there that I can't get off. It may be some glue that has absorbed into the paint or something...any ideas?

If its an outline like its around the molding then its probably clear coat. The previous owner must have had the car repainted and the molding was clearcoated over. Mine has the same thing on one side and I am gonna have to go to a body shop to see if it can be taken care of.

Yeah it's an outliine at the top and bottom...as a matter of fact there's an edge an soemthing that appears to be clearcoat chipping away. You think maybe a body shop could just wetsand that area and re-clear it? It's not extremely apparent, but def enough to annoy me. I went to Advance and got some 3m tar, adhesive, and wax remover that I'm going to try tomorrow.

Let me know if you find a way to fix it cause mine pisses me off and I don't wanna go to a body shop cause they charge too much.

I just used a heat gun and it peeled right off. Left a little bit of residue, but I just used my thumb and rubbed it off after I got it nice and warm with the heat gun.

nice writeup. I went ahead and did this a good while ago. Only problem was I didn't use any residue remover or chemical to soften the glue. Ended up putting the fishing line into my hands lfrom pulling so hard along the molding ol. They are like mits so I recovered but damn I wish I wore gloves.

I'm gonna see what happens tomorrow w/ the adhesive and tar remover and I'll let ya know. If not I'm gonna carry it to a friend's body shop and see if they can wet sand and buff it out, which should be pretty cheap.
