Default 2006 Impala SS

The Car Connection is reporting..
http://www.thecarconnection.com/inde...8&article=7249
Quote:
Chevrolet is busy perfecting the heavily updated 2006 Impala. The front-wheel drive sedan will remain on the W-car platform, but will be re-engineered and undergo major cosmetic changes as well.

Codenamed GMX360, the heavily redesigned Impala will arrive for the 2006 model year, along with the SS version seen here, indicated by the dual exhaust and spoiler.

Looks like they might use the Malibu rear end on the Impala. That Impala may have the SS badge but it hasnt earned it.

I would love a rear drive Impala but look at the sales numbers close to 300K units, thats what GM see's, can't blame them for sticking to something that works for the general public.

If the Impy must remain a FWD econo box, fine. GM has to make its money. Just give us a Maro and a four dour rwd car (call it a Belleaire or a Caprice or something and give it an LS2 and a SS badge). and we will be happy.

Eswolfgang made an outstanding point why they are doing this. 300K a year pays for a lot of R&D voilla' 5th Gen Maro, 6th Gen Vette, LS2 Goat, and things we all like. The general cannot be faulted for doing this.

Yeah but how many FWD platforms and names do they need to shame to make those dollars? When did we last see a big RWD 4dr V8 for Chevy?

Jesus, relax guys. They're just tweaking the existing car before the model run is up, to keep it competitive until redesign time.

What he said.

FWIW the next Impala is supposed to be based on Zeta according to insider info. But remember that Buick, Holden and Pontiac will get their hands on the platform before Chevy according to the current GM scheduling for the allocation of the platform amongst its nameplates. Geez if they wanted to make it easy they'd have Holden develop the 4 door, have Pontiac do the 2 door and Chevy do the light truck/Ute and just sell all of em in both markets.
