Default T-56 problems, did I break something internally??

Ok, those old LS1.commers who frequented the drivetrain forum must all remember me, I'm on my 4th T-56 in 31k miles

Anyways, about a month after the last rebuild, and coincidentally the day I was dropping it off for the TT installation, it got stuck in 4th gear. I ignored it, it didn't happen fora while, then one day it happens again, so the story goes for the next 5 months.

Saturday at the track I hit 4th on my last run and it gets stuck. I pop it out, with a grind and the shifter is hard to move side to side or into any gear. Back on the street it begins grinding matched rev downshifts ONLY, into third. A few miles later it goes away. Now I am noticing that when I put it in 5th and get on the gas, my shifter knob pops up and back about an inch?? At first I thought it popped out of gear, but it seems to remain in gear. I though "trans mount" immediately, but it doesn't do it in any other gear I tried to hold it in once and now it gets stuck in 5th, but not in 4th....godamn this thing is tempermental.

Is their a chance that something has broken off and is floating around causing mischief?? It seems like it has a new problem every couple days and the old one goes away...lol.

I'm about to get a hi-poi rebuild if this crap keeps up.

Probably a mess of things in there...syncros are probably gone with it all...

Yes, I'm thinking at least that much....

What freaks me out is that one day it's one problem, then it's fine. A week later, a new problem, then it's fine. and so on, and so on, and so on........

Synchros seem to be ok, I haven't been grinding or getting locked out on hard upshifts or powershifts.

HI there,
This sounds as if one of the lockout pins is missing, during the last overhaul.
You see, you have 3 lockout pins, which ride on the shifter rail, and if one is missing, sometimes, you can throw 2 shift rails at the same time. What this does it locks in the particular gear, until vibration or other factors loosen the rails enough to unlock, and shift again.
This is what makes sense to me, c4c5

Thanks for the info

I'm going to call the dealer again this week and get an appointment. 5th and 6th gear went out on the way to school this morning, but 6th is working again as of a few hours ago.

Lawrence

Lawrence, we have talked about this, and you know my b/f tore his tranny up real good.

Well he found a great place that only does manual trannies. They shimmed and blueprinted his tranny. It felt great and smooth. On the way to the track, he went to downshift to 4th and it got stuck!! It popped out of 3rd and kept sticking in 4th.

He took it out and brought it back to them. Ended up being a 'key' getting knocked off one of the rails.

They adjusted it and also replaced the case, had a slight crack.

All said and done, the tranny is fine now.

Hope it works out for you. I know if mine ever gets messed up or out of whack I got a good place to repair/rebuild mine.

For future info here is the # to Westech ask for Norm he is really nice. They can blueprint your tranny and put in strengthend parts/synchs.
