don't know much about the cam question but I can help with the fuel part. For a second gen there are two ways you can go. One, find a 3rd gen fuel pump/sender assembly (should be easy to find in a junkyard). This will mount right up to the existing pickup hole on the 2nd gen tank. However you need to find a way to incorporate a baffle in the tank to avoin fuel starvation. 2nd way( which is the way I am going with my 71 LS1 swap) ...use a in tank setup from tanks inc. you have to cut you tank and fabricate a plate to mount the assembly on the tank. i will post pics here later this week when I am done with my tank.

the bad ***, off the shelf cam for the 5.3, tried and true... is the Thunder Racing TR220 specs are : 220/220 .551/.551 112, this cam with a stall converter and 4.10's in a 4400lb truck, is in the 12's on like 3-4 trucks. It's easy to tune, lopes great, and in a lighter car..... will be just sick. if you want fast and easy..... that's the one. the only time i'd go smaller, would be with a heavier vehicle. if you want more input on this, pm me.... i've got tons of info, i've been cam shopping for a month now. I've decided on a custom grind, but for your application...... this is the one. good luck, and have fun

For the fuel system you could also sump the stock tank and run an external high pressure fuel pump with a fuel pressure regulator close to the tank. Reason for putting the regulator close to the tank is so you don't have a return line going the length of the car.

I've been looking into the 5.3L swap in my 71 Firebird for some time now. The motor is a real tight fit under the hood as far as hood clearance goes. Does your buddy plan on using a cowl hood for clearance or what is his plan there? I'm trying to decide on a 5.3 or LS1 5.7. 5.3L is way cheaper but I think I'd have to change hoods.

Sorry if I got off topic a bit. Just thought you guys might be able to help.
