4l60e bounce off rev limiter few times before shift
i just bought a 94 lt1 camaro with 120k miles from a lady who got the car in the divorce so she knew nothing about it. i believe it to be all stock except i think it has a shift kit because it shifts hard. when i put it in d and hold it at WOT it bounces off the rev limiter about 3 times between upshifts. seems to downshift fine under acceleration and go good tho and while crusing it shifts at the correct time, little hard. if i could have some imput or help troubleshooting that would be great. btw tranny fluid level is fine, not a trans guru but looks like it could use flush/filter. motor kind of cut out a little at first then i cleaned maf and tb seems like it doesnt cut out for the short time i drove it..still am going to put in plugs wires cap rotor soon. thanks a lot
i don't know if flush and filter would help or if it needs to be rebuilt or fixed... anyone have any ideas? i'll probably just wait til after winter if it needs rebuilt
No, you dont need a rebuild. Have your tune checked... Where is your shift points set at, and where is your rev limiter set at. Most tuners move the rev limiter pretty high so you wont hit it. I went through this SAME issue a long time ago, and was on my way to get a new tranny. I was pissed and worried. I didnt have the money for a damn tranny. And the shop owner called me and said my car was ready. I said, "what, youve only had my car an hour...???" I got there and he explained everything to me. He moved my rev limiter up, and checked my shift points. That was 100K miles ago, and still no more issues. Now, some guys may have some slipping going on, but make sure before you just go throwing money around. Unless your rich....

Well with a 94 you have OBD1 so good luck finding a local tuner to do it but if you can't i reccomend madtuner.com , he does mail order tunes and has done my last three tunes for different setups and will be doing my next one for my new stall and custom cam.

Unfortunately, it sounds like your tranny is on its way out. My tranny has died twice and both times it exhibited the same symptoms as your car. Both times it was due to a burned up 3-4 clutch pack. Very rarely the tune is the problem but more often than not it's due to burned clutches. Sorry...

my car bounced on the 2-3 limiter and i changed my tune and then it stopped. it also had a very weak 2-3 shift. i had my tranny looked at. and had a shiftkit put in. since then it shifts like a dream. dont jump the gun and buy a new tranny just cuz a few guys on this site say its time for one.
It could be either a tired transmission or a bad tune. If the transmission is slipping, it is forcing the shift higher in the RPM's...thus making it hit the Rev limiter. By increasing the Shift point's, you are really just masking the problem. If it is a bad tune, well you can adjust shift points easily.
If no history is known on the vehicle, I'd go the safer route and start with a fluid / filter swap. Find out exactly what the RPM is at when the Rev limiter is hitting. (HP Tuners or Autotap) and see if it matches to what a stock LT1 limits at.

Ed Wright at Fast chips had a Programming fix/hack he applied to fix this if it's not burned clutches. It was a common problem with OBDI computers. It has something to do with 'Abuse Mode'. Ed flashed a parameter (or two) that fixed it.
I'll see if I can find the link for it. Someone had posted pictures(.jpg's) of the Cells that had to be modified using Tunercat.
