Do it cheap but do it right. You can keep the car clean without hacking it. Find the cheapest components (engine/trans and whatnot) but keep it clean, the 'measure twice cut once' type of deal. Attention to detail is free.

Very well said! Yes, most of the drivetrain parts we have already. Some are cheap and some are left over from other projects but weren't cheap initially. We are thinking along your thought lines as the voting seems to be almost even. A "done right" build with the costs kept in check.

I cant wait to tear this thing apart and get started on this project! Anyone else we know helping?

Naw, just us two dumb asses taking on this build! Looks like it is close enough that we will be doing a cheap build but will concentrate on doing it right. We will try and retain as much of the floor and stock body as possible. Add a cage for strength but try and hide it. I will do a second poll so the readers can pick the engine, trans and turbo options they like. G
Giffin added this top the fiirst post, since we cant add or modify the poll on this thread. Choose your Drivetrain combo...most popular combo wins.
Seems I can't add another poll so here is the engine, tranny and turbo list. All of these we have already so the readers can pick the drive train as well. Post on here with your drivetrain ideas and we will add up the votes in the end.
ENGINES;
1: 02 LQ4 6.0l (has H beam rods, needs pistons, would use forged) In it $600
2: 98 LS1 motor 100K miles stock. in it $230
3: 03 LM7 5.3L stock 89K miles. In it $300
Transmissions;
1: TH400 rebuilt stock. In it $0 (came with a car I parted out)
2: TH350 stock needs rebuild. would put a brake in it. In it $0
3: TH400 fresh w/trans brake Swapped a vega for it. In it $300
Turbos;
1: 2 ebay T3/T70 .84 a/r ssautochrome new. In them for $325 for both
2: New Turbonetics T76 Q trim .96 a/r Ball Bearing, In it $900
3: Buy a BW S475 T6 flange (would be in it $650)
Rear Axles;
1: 12 Bolt 60" flange to flange w/posi 4.11's. In it $0. Out of parted car
2: Ford 9" 3.25's, nodular housing, needs to be narrowed. Having housing ends, need spool. In it $62.53 (cost of ends)
My personal vote is to use the LS1 short block, put the 317 6.0 heads on it, ZO6 cam, and use the T76 BB turbo with the TH400 that has the brake. Then cut down the 9" rear. Just my personal opinion. If the votes all go for something else then I will hold true to my post and use the combo with the most votes! I will deliver what the masses want!!
This should be interesting. I have a friend that always goes cheap, and i always try to go as "all out" as i can. A build merging the 2 would be awesome! Gotta keep my eye on this.

Thats my personal pick too... But Maybe you should Gernade the 5.3L first since it's complete and 1/2 the investment... See how far it will Go till It goes Boom!!! Then the 6.0L should be done and ready to drop in its place...
Didn't the early LS1's like your 98 have oilling Issues not to mention the weaker rod bolts, and a weaker designed timing chain??? It would probally spin a bearing or have a rod let go before You got any were with it....
The 03 5.3L should have coated side skirts on the pistons wich should help a little bit with wear under load not to mention it should also have the stronger timing chain and deffinetly the better Stock rod bolts....
I have an 03 5.3L with 60k and the bores still look brand new...
Ok, you are the 5th person to offer to buy the damn thing! like anything in this world, it can be bought. Just bring cash. I would just go find an 80 corolla and stuff it all in that. But I'm not holding my breath that someone would actually go through with buying it so, on that note, it will be torn apart this week end. Fear not (or a little) this build will go through!!!
I like the 9 sec Z but I don't personaly like independent rears. I like how a solid axle slides and I am very used to how it slides. I just find most independent rears a little touchy at speed if you change throttle angle or have to change direction suddenly. Most I have driven tend to unload in a hurry so you have to on top of your game. Solid axles you just hang em out there, throttle steer, pitch it, hammer it mess it up and they are fairly forgiving. JMHO.
