Question Trimming LS1/F-body fan & shroud?

Has anyone ever trimmed the shroud on the Camaro/F-body fans before to shallow mount them on the radiator? I'm wondering how much, if any, could be trimmed off the fans so they don't mount as deep.

These are the fans I'm talking about. They measure 28 1/8" wide x 18 1/8" tall x 5 1/2" deep. I have less than 4 1/2" of room to work with.

I'm not an engineer so this is opinion only. GM would also want the fans as close as possible for the same reason you do. They must have left space to get as much air flow over as big a surface area as possible. If the fans were closer, air would flow faster through the radiator but through a smaller surface area. This air speed may be too fast for the radiator to disipate heat properly and combined with a smaller air flow surface area could mean less cooling. My kids are right, I can really bullsh#*! You must have looked into other areas of saving space-move rad forward, engine back(if not already mounted), different pulleys, etc. So cut it! Maybe the fans will run more or go to high speed sooner, your temp may go up a degree, or no problem at all. You could always look into aftermarket fans if a problem comes up.

Can you flip them around to the other side and use them as pushers?

You many be able to just mount the fan motor with some spacer to push it closer to the Radiator. As the Fans are the part the extents the most. That way you don't have to mess with the shrould and by sinking the fan motor deeper into the shrould housing, it would put it closer to the radiator and maybe get you that 1" of needed space.

How much room does the fan have between the blades and the core ?

Just a thought ?

Sorry for the delay, I have been out of town.

Could I trouble anyone for a few measurements, from people who actually have the LS1/LT1 fans? I'm curious to learn the fan motor dimensions, ie. where they stick out in relation to the rest of the fan.

Looking for:
A) relative ball-park depth of where the water pump pulley would be
B) fan motor location from top to fan motor
C) fan motor location from side to fan motor
D) fan motor location from top to fan motor
E) fan motor location from side to fan motor
