I was wondering if anybody knows how can I get the original alternator of a 02 camaro to charge. Im building a 72 chevy truck with an 02 camaro ls1 I got the engine started, Im using a painless harness but I just dont know how to make the 02 alternator work.

On a F-body alternator pin B on the 4 wire plug should have a 12v source with a 470ohm 1/2 watt resistor inline in order to "turn on" the alternator. This will be a switched power source, not battery power.

You can also put a small lightbulb in this place - i.e. the dash charge light.
I've had my engine running like this on an engine stand.

I keep seeing reference to a resistor. I assume if the factory harness is used this is already in place. I simply hooked the larger cable to the + battery terminal block on my 02 ls1 and it works in my 65 cutlass normally 14+ V on the gauge.

They will charge without using the resistor. The problem is, they will burn up quick.

May be that explains why the alt that came with my engine fried after 3500 miles on the swap. I now have a new Alt with about a 1000 on it.

So I need to add the resistor to my factory Harness to the single wire coming from my PCM to the ALT correct?

If this be the case please help me understand why it is required sense I simply hook the same wire to 12 volts as was done in the original camaro and changed nothing else internal to the harness or pcm.

I am not 100% sure since I neverr used a 98 harness, but I believe that only applies to 98 harnesses.

If you are using the wire from the pcm to activate the alternator, you don't need the resistor. The wire from the pcm shouldn't be putting out 12 volts all the time. The one time I checked mine, it was only at 10 volts. You just don't want 12 volts going to pin B all the time.

i plucked an Alt off of what looked like a 98 or 99 S10 Blazer. It physically bolted up to my 5.3 truck Alt bracket. I got the plug off the truck as well and there is only 1 wire in it. I will put 12 volts to it and see if it charges... if so i'll then use a resistor to lower the voltage to around 10
