8/28/2009~ First Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxjl4pWl_mI

4/20/2009~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Will it fit? heh heh heh.
10 seconds, here i come...

Hey everyone!
So, i totalled my 98 c5 vette... Insurance company didn't want to pay me what i wanted, so parting it out is making me a fair amount of extra change... Plus it gives me an LS1 to play with!

I'm not a newbie, been around this board for years... EVEN ON THE FRONT PAGE ONCE W/ THE TURBO SUZUKI BANDIT!
but been around Turbo projects for a while...
95 civic turbo'd Dyno'd 404whp
04 Suzuki bandit 1200cc Dyno'd 260whp (Search: Tony the Tiger suzuki Youtube)
Turbo'd my 120hp 4 stroke Outboard on my Checkmate 16' boat.

This is my new project!::::::::::::::::
2000 s10 single cab short bed. 2.2L 5-spd
179xxx miles
Few rust spots and dents
Bought the truck for $1000 buckaroos!!! from a chap up in New Hampshire.
I pretty much stole it i think.

This truck is perfect for my project. It has the 5 speed, 2wd, NO A/C!! so no box under the hood to deal with for clearance.

Basic rundown of the numerical alphabet soup plans.
S10 - truck
LS1, basic strength mods. ARP rodbolts, headbolts, Compcam Valve springs, pushrods
GM Hotcam
BRIB underdrive pulley
T56 - 6 speed
T70 Turbocharger (single) 8psi to start
8.8 - Ford rear end 3.73 gears, limited slip, disc brakes, ladder bars (5.0 explorer rear end)
8.8 Rear end is 31 spline!!!! Yes!

Goal of 550whp!Just for a start~
Lets see how it goes! 550 i want to the wheel... I'm limited by stock pistons/rods... but i got some re-assurance. ARP Rod bolts, head bolts, conservative timing, 93 octane, etc...
By pulling timing and upping boost to 12psi~ i should be well over 600 to the wheel in my 3,045 lbs S10. The stock LS1 timing map is very aggressive, which is why it requires 91 octane. Not high compression, but very aggressive timing... So pull some of that out, more boost = more hp safely.

There she is! The new s-10!!!!!!
That's also my "new.to.me" daily driver, 02 SVT focus. Peppy little car, fun to drive.
There in the garage is what's left of the Vette getting parted out.
Poppa-Dukes Jeep in the pic too, and mamma-dukes Honda

i WANTED to keep it cheap... but it didn't turn out that way. Through selling the parts off the 98 vette, i am making way more than expected, so i reached a little more into my pocketbook than i originally wanted.

Anyway, here's a basic breakdown:
I'll update this list as i go, and keep adding things to the "I Wanna Buy It" thread haha.

4/30/2009~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hey ladies.
So this past weekend the new rear axle got put in… The Ford 8.8 rear. Awesome axle swap, especially for the price.
Ford 9” rear’s go for $2,000 complete, plus they require fabrication to fit.
My Ford 8.8” rear is direct bolt in!!!! $400 from the salvage yard out of a 95+ explorer. I also Sold my stock axle 20 mins after I took it out as well for $100 on craigslist.
Best parts about this new axle: 3.73 gears, Limited slip, Ladder bars, Disc brakes, 31 spline axles. To do all this to a Ford 9”, or even to modify my stock axle, would have been WAY MORE THAN THE $300 it cost me! So for the dollars spent, this was a hell of a deal.
$400 for the axle
-$100 old axle
$30 U bolt kit and lowering blocks
$45 Ford U joint flange
So for $375, I think it’s a HELL of a mod.

Hopefully this axle will handle the Hoosiers I wanna get: 29”x12”- 15 drag slicks. I think a 12” wide tire should be good enough to make up for the zero weight in the back of this thing.
Hoosier 18190D06 - Hoosier Drag Slicks

new BRIB underdrive pulley, and headers.

Row row row your truck… gently past the Honda!

Check out how much BEEFIER the 8.8 is than the stock GM 7.5

If only I was using the stock 2.2L and t5 tranny… then the drive shaft would have lined up perfectly w/ the 8.8!

Doin work:

The rear has 2” lowering blocks. Hopefully w/ the heavier engine in front, the front should come down 2” as well… If not, I might just cut off half a coil out of the front spring.

The Rear axle (8.8) was 6” wider overall from hub to hub than the 7.5. Luckily, the stock jeep wrangler tires I had lying around were the right Lug pattern (5x4.5), and also the perfect offset! Check it out!

SO… why didn’t I get anything else done this weekend????
Two reasons… I had to finish making a passenger seat for the woman… and help a friend put his LS/vtec engine in his honda. Built, and turbod… should be 350whp~~ He’s my hired help paid in returned help.

^ He didn’t trust my Schwab Shop Customs welding job on his engine mounts… So I showed him I could dance on his valve cover… THEN I made him dance too, and snagged a Polaroid of his stupidity…

Zip Lock bags and Zip ties… I think Zip Branigan shoulda put this on… How to stop **** from going into the gas tank:

Here's the silly valve sprign compressor i made w/ my 200$ Harbor freight plasma cutter and drill press.

Cut twice, measure once!
Home made valve spring compressor! Yea i love hack tools!

Comp cam pushrods, vavle springs, and retainers.

And the other weekend fabrication job… Passenger seat! Damn I’m a good seamstress and upholsterer… and welding and grinding skills aint bad either huh?

She does grinding too!!!!!!!!!!

When she’s not helping….

Make believe vanity plate:

6/16/2009~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So, the truck has made ALOT of progress lately.

If i had just wanted to get it on the road, i could have a long time ago... but there are many little things that i keep updating and making a little bit better.

Here's the new engine... Painted the block black, and intake manifold Red.

After it was all in, and i realized there was a hopeless chance of leaning the engine back far enough to get that mile long T56 tranny in... the cross member had to be notched.

Then, tranny went in, and I had to make a tranny cross member. Stock one would not do, and weighed a ton. So i used some 6" channel Iron.
Used a piece this thick because it will also be the mount for the turbo location, and the mount for the Remote Oil Pump.

Also had to notch back the tranny tunnel hole in the floorboard. Shifter fit about 4 inches more rearward than stock 5 speed.

SO, i had to keep a little HMT style in this truck.... AND HERE IT IS!!!!!
Good ol' Husky tools.

It's acctually extremely comfortable and ergonomically positioned.

Driveshaft fit's PERFECT!!!!!!!!! Very strange that it worked out like that with the Ford rear end, and the T56 being 6 inches more rearward.

Battery relocated to the rear as well.

Tie down to be added soon.

So, LS1, 6 speed, T70 turbo, Ford 8.8 rear end with 3.73's and posi.....
I think i have a problem...

ONLY 100 MPH?!?!?!?!? WTF!!!!!!

Radiator support is back in, most of the front end, radiator

NEW SUPRISE!!!!!!!!!!!

Friend of mine took out his rear seats out of his 04 GTO to mount a nitrous bottle.
So, his rear seats are now my front seats.
Fabbed up some brackets for the bottom, welded in some seat belt brackets to the floor... Still gotta fix up the rear back rest of the seat.

C5 corvette fans mounted and wired. Relay's too on firewall.

Now, starting the mid pipe from the headers to turbo.

All done! 2.5" piping from headers to turbo.

And Downpipe being Fabbed.... Another true HMT shot.
3" dowpipe straight out the back.

MONEY SHOT!!!!!!!!

Ladder bars are now welded in w/ brackets.

Wheel hop.... what wheel hop? What IS wheel hop??? My truck will have no idea... never will she hear of such a thing!!!!!!

CAB CORNER CANCER!!!!!!
Still needs to be addressed....
Just a glob of fiberglass resin left over from dad's sailboat.

Front springs cut to lowere it about 2.5-3"
Rear has 2" lowering blocks.

Ordered up some wheel adapters.
1.25" thick for rear wheels. 5x4.5 ford conversion adapter to 4x4.75 GM
2.00" thick for front wheels. 5x4.75 to 5x4.75 GM spacer.
$75 a pair on Egay. Nice pieces. Came with lugs.

Primer... 2 coats. Face of wheels and inside.
C5 stock wagon wheel corvette rims.
17x8.5" fronts, 18x9.5" rears.

2 coats primer, 3 coats black, came out amazing.
THEN>>>> first coat of clear and FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKK.

Way too humid to be paintint with clear. It had just thunderstormed outside as well...

Luckily, they dried ok after two days.

Sandblasted frame, and starting to paint. Hired help in the pic.

SO, THAT IS THE UPDATE.
Got screwed over for a set of head bolts (ARP), and a Fidanza 4.3 clutch... Thats on the to buy list now...

Fuel...

Got the c5 Vette feed and return lines to work perfectly with the truck.
I hate quick disconnect fittings, so i used my brake line flare tool, and ran 3/8" brake lines all the way back to the tank for my fuel lines.

These S10's, you can't change just the fuel pump. You need to do the whole sending unit. I chose not to participate in complying with this rule... They put it together somehow... Therefore, i can take it apart and put in my new Walbro!!!!!!!! Yes sir i did.

Got the Deka 60# injectors in there, with the Uego Wideband also placed 36" post turbo in the exhaust stream.... So we're covered for 8-10lbs of boost in the fuel department.

thank you~
I've done lots of turbo setups before on different vehicles, and my motorcycle, but the only question i've ever had was about the Mass Air meter. Does it need to go before the turbo? or can it be inline in the pressure side of the charge pipes? And the MAP sensor should compensate for that in the back of the intake manifold, correct? How high of boost can the stop MAP sensor read to?

MAF has to be in the pressure side going to tb. I can't remember what a stock MAP will be good to.....14 lbs??? Maybe someone can shed more light.

Well the stock maf is supposed to be good till 600hp but I did a twin turbo car that made 800rwhp and never had a problem tuning it.
By the way how did you paint the intake I wanna do one and see how it turns out... any special things i need to do to get the paint to stick?

Then i guess i'll be all set the way it sits now~

About the intake... Originally i wanted a glossy smooth look to it so i was spending alot of time sanding the runners down. Turned out that wasn't going to happen cuz i couldn't get into the deep edges and i'm lazy...
So, all i did was remove everything off of it. (fuel rails, injectors, screws, map sensor).
Tape off the gasket surfaces, take out the O rings, and wash the whole thing down with lots of Carb Cleaner or Brake cleaner to get the oil off.

I used a Rustoleum Enamel paint. THey're pretty resistant to heat, and the intake manifold doesn't get too hot anyway.

I gotta say... I like your style. Nice blend of using cheap/free/old parts from your vette and using new stuff. Ive never given thought to building an S10...but after seeing your thread Im starting to think that would make an awesome DD/putz around truck. I like the use of the rear GTO seats!! I guess you cant adjust them at all though right? Did you have to build a frame to hold the backs firmly?

Great work!!! Cant wait to see the finished truck...and to see it running/driving! Its gonna be a handful for sure!

J.
