Guys,

I received some of the new design quick disconnect fittings and as promised, here are some pics and my thoughts.

The fittings are a 3/8" quick disconnect X -6AN male. They do not rely on any spring loaded clips to hold the line engaged. The fitting has a split nut that holds the line in place securely and will not allow it to be removed without removing the nut. A little dab of blue locktite will make this fitting absolutely bullet proof. Russell has done a beautiful job on this fitting and this is clearly going to be the new gold standard for quick disconnect fittings.

I know that I have said some less than kind things about the previous design, but they clearly have nailed it this time. Now, if they can just get production cranked up, and offer black and silver fittings as well!

Same design as on their 5/16 fitting it looks like. Now if only they'll replace everyone's spring clip fittings with these, lol.

What are they doing to help those of us with the old fittings? Mine are brand new and have never seen fuel. Id rather switch out to the updated design.

I don't know the part numbers yet. They are so new that they are not in their parts lists. These fittings were literally the first ones out of production. I would call their tech support people for more info.

Are the outside diameters of the new fitting the same as the old fitting? The reason for my question is that on the Corvette filter/regulator, the feed and return is very close together (mine actually touch) so if the new fitting has a larger OD it would be a problem.

I'm looking to use some of these on a street rod we have in the shop. It has an engine out of a 04 GTO and I was wanting to use an external pump and the corvette filter/regulator.

I've had a long talk with one of the Edelbrock techs. The new part numbers are:

644120 (3/8" hard line to -6, replaces 640850)
644110 (5/16" hard line to -6, replaces 640860)

Both will be available starting on Friday, June 17. It sounds as if John really did get a set of preproduction ones. Summit has them available for ordering now.

And thanks John for all the good info - I had one of the older fittings blow off on my LS-powered Miata on the track this weekend, that could have ended very badly had my luck gone the other way. We use several of these in our Miata conversions and we do not want any roasted customers!

Is there any problem running the same size line for the pressure and return line? I had always thought the pressure line was bigger.

AN6 feed and return here. Stock has 3/8" feed, 5/16" return. 1/16" of tubing isnt going to make any difference esp since its a no/low pressure return to the tnk

I just talked to summit. They called russell and said the fittings won't be out till july 16. I'm going to check to see if there are any other options out there. I gotta get this car done and I don't want to use the old style fitting where there is a chance it might blow apart. I don't want to explain to the customer why his car burnt to the ground.

The 3/8-6a is $14.69. I didn't get the price for the 5/16-6a.

I too have had several come off in use and it will scare the hell out of you when the fitting blows loose and sprays all over a hot engine! The only advice I can give it to let Edelbrock know when you have a failure, because if we don't tell them, then they won't know! When I first started talking to the Russsell Tech support guys, they said that they knew of no problems with the fittings, but when you talk to people who use these fittings regularly, you would be hard pressed to find someone who has not had at least one fail. Either people are not complaining, or the Russell tech guys are just sweeping the complaints under the rug. In any case, I think that you will find the new fittings will resolve any issues that you had with the old fittings.
If you get the run-around from the Tech support people on the Russell side of the isle about replacing a defective fitting, drop me an IM and I will send you a contact at Edelbrock that can help you.

I would strongly recommend that any old style fittings that are going to stay in service, be fitted with something that will prevent the clips from disengaging. If you look at an older post of mine on this issue, you will see how I retrofitted a bunch of fittings that I have installed in the last few years using a piece of vinyl tubing. There are others that use an O-ring pushed up into the cavity to prevent the clips from disengaging. The old style fittings can be made to not fail, but it does not always make the fitting very attractive. I have retrofitted all fittings on the underside of the cars with the vinyl tubing, but I am going to replace all the engine compartment fittings on all the cars that I have built over the last few years, whether they be on my own cars or those of my customers.
