I have been contiplating for awhile now but I think I'm going to put my built 408 LS1 into my 1987 GN. I'll keep all you guys updated if when I start this project. I just have to find a good set of headers that will fit and support 800hp on the bottle . I think stock manifolds are not going to cut it.

S&P makes nice headers for that swap. Matter of fact, they have a writeup on doing your EXACT swap on their site.
if you do a 4l80 and build the rear end, you wont break anything. Im using the stock 8.5" 10 bolt with 140k on it, its holding just fine. Going to a spool and big axles soon though.
I have gotten as high as 24mpg with this setup, all highway, couldnt check really good but thats close. Best i ever got with the V6 was 29.5. So i picked up 200hp and only lost 5mpg, not bad. This winter im adding the intercooler, and dropping to a 3.23 gear, that should net me aout 26mpg and closer to 700hp, on the stock motor. LSx motors are the shit.

I've already had 9 GN's and this one already has a cage, 9 inch w/ 3.90's and a spool. Also double Wolfe anti roll bar w/ comp shocks. I also added a Baer 4 piston brake upgrade upfront to help slow down this heavy boat. I'm probably going with a th400 because I plan on really running this car hard at the track. I ordered a set of S&P headers but returned them because I felt that the headers were way to small for my combo. I might try a set of Schoenfelds. I'll try to keep you guys updated with install pics when the project gets rolling.

Hey all,
I just joined and I'm first looking for budget info on an LS1 swap into an '86 Regal.
I want an LS1/4L60E w/ computer, harness, accessories, etc. What should I plan to spend for the entire swap? I'm hoping I can do it for $5k.
Y'all lemme know

Depends what kind of milage motor your after, but most swaps end up at the $6500-$7000 mark by the time its driveable. And it depends how much of the work you can do yourself.
I had some guys put mine in and make it drivable, took 2 weeks (only because we waited a solid week for the parts for the FBW to work), labor was $650. I have about $3600 in my swap including labor. But I only have $1700 in the engine/trans.

Whoa, thats what I'm aiming for! Is that $3600 including engine/trans and parts & labor?
I don't wanna do anything to the engine internally, the factory numbers for LS1's are good enough for me. I just want one in solid condition w/ an Automatic trans.
Hey DarthMonte, you paid some guys to do the whole job? What, if any, work did you do yourself?
I don't really have a place to work on my car myself, and I only have moderate knowledge (being modest) of the mechanics....just saying that I don't know how to do a rearend myself or any fabrication work or rebuild an engine or trans completely. I wanna know about any unforeseen delays or any tricks I can use to avoid problems.

Yep $3600 for exhaust, engine/trans, wiring harness rework, labor, motor mounts, crossmember modification, mounting new shifter & console, fuel pump, and misc. hoses and bolts.
They made everything fit and all of the fabrication, I just held stuff, handed tools, made parts runs, and helped figure out problems.
I am in the same boat as you, we just moved, and no garage yet. The bug to make the swap was killing me, so I had HPA do it for me. Good thing with those guys is they let me hang around the shop and participate, I probably couldn't have handled it otherwise.
I do not have any close up pics, but i do have some from a distance (can't really tell the thickness of the flange). Iwas gonna actually install them a couple of hours ago but the header bolts supplied didn't fit the ls1 heads ...if you want some of the pics that i took from a distance i can email them to you...pm me your email address if interested.

Let me start by saying DO NOT BUY SCHOENFELD HEADERS !!! They are no where near fitting a G-Body with a LS1. I have a LS1 block with conversion motor mount plates bolted to the block and I am using Moroso solid SBC mounts. Luckily I had a set of Pacesetter F-Body headers and I gave them a try. The drivers side fits perfectly. I just had to trim the little bump on the firewall where they join the two pieces of the tranny tunneland upper firewall.I had to cut off the ears from my turbo 400 which is common with most swaps. The passenger side fits but you have to dent in one of the tubes where it hits the lower A- arm mount and thats it. For now I was using a empty LS1 block and a empty Turbo 400 case. I should have my 408 and tranny in there by next weekend. Ones its in, I'll snap off some pics for you guys.
