From what I understand the 230r has a 9" ring rear. I saw that rear swapped into an S2000 before. Not sure who makes the conversion.

i've had one for awhile now. and i don't think he's done any mock fitting other than the engine itself. there's no way that shifter will line up if he in fact moved the engine 3.5in rearward. store bought headers will NOT fit on that car, and the nissan rearend is a ridiculous choice for an LS1, especially if he plans on running 315 rears.

thats an awesome project, i dont see why the nissan rear wont work, you can build that rear to be pretty strong, i just get the feeling like S200+LS1=NO TRACTION. really cool project though, keep us posted with updates.

A GTO is 3800 pounds. The S2000 is barely 3000, maybe less. I would never put a Nissan rear end in a GTO, but in an S2000 with limited traction I really don't see a problem. A cobra 8.8 would be better.

Not trying to hijack... Just thought some other people should do this project, too.

Cruisin around ebay today, found this:

Its an s2000 shell that someone is selling, for like $500

Thought someone could be interested

.

ahh another person that claims to have done the swap. and just registered today to boot!! well, welcome i guess... the trans IS in the car and im not using the weak t56, im using a tko600 that is much shorter and the shifter lines up a little short, even after bringing the engine back. i will show all my pictures and will be happy to be #2 in line after you if you provide some of your pics... and actually that nissan rear end has been known to support 9 sec passes reliably...

have you mock fitted any headers yet, or are you just going to throw parts at it? i ended up putting a front clip on the car, simply to accommodate the custom headers. at the time, there were no off-shelf headers that came even close to fitting.

i'm using C4 IRS. you'd better be using more than a nissan rearend if you want that setup to last.

what size radiator are you going to use? it doesn't look like you have much room left in there, with the stock radiator core support. are you removing the A/C? are you using the OEM multi-belt accessory setup?

and because this is ls1tech, what mods on the engine?

i'd recommend keeping the ABS. if anything, get a standalone ABS unit.

--computer will be stock gm unit reflashed with standalone harness
--headers will be made 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 stepped long tubes
--nissan r230 is going to be used untill i find something better
--custom radiator, and yes there is plenty of room since the engine is pushed back, it is behind the frame cross support-has not been moved, debating on keeping ac, plenty of room for it.
--no mods yet, getting everything in and when its done engine goes to machine shop, forged shortblock, intake, heads, cam. 450-500whp n/a then some nitrous
--abs is gone due to engine bay shave, for looks only, i want a very clean engine bay with only a very clean/polished engine. why should i keep it? it only lets you turn/keep control in slippery conditions-it wont be driven in any of those.

I woudlnt call the t-56 weak, there are a few guys running those here making up to 500rwhp....just with an upgraded clutch/flywheel.

But either way the stronger tko600 is a great upgrade

I thought the r230 diff was pretty indestructible.
Do you have one laying around you can use?
Does the fab required look minimal?
Im sure you've looked at alot of differentials, does the r230 look easiest?

Like GatTagO said an aluminum 8.8 cobra diff would probably be the best choice.
'03+ explorers have an aluminum independent 8.8 with a different housing and rear cover.

a13xf2oc,
Nice to hear of your project. Any pics or a website?
Very interested to see the C4 rear setup.
LS2000 swaps are sweet.

Cool swap, should be wicked badass.

on a side note: if you've ever driven a car extensively with no ABS, then understandable no ABS same with just for a show car. Anything else though and I just have to laugh.

i meant in terms of a 700hp setup. i know that you can get them built to handle the increased hp but i got such a good deal on the tko i couldnt pass it up.

R200 = 200 mm ring gear (25.4 mm/") = 7.87"
R230 = 230 mm ring gear (25.4 mm/") = 9.06"

Should be very cool when completed. If you can get some corner weight scales many would be interested in the final tally.... especially front/rear bias.

A T56 with a few hundred dollars worth of parts can handle 700rwhp in a 3500lb F-body. Steel shift forks, carbon blockers, upgraded synchros. They are the basics of any rebuild.

With upgraded gears, Viper output shaft and a few other tricks they can handle 1400rwhp+. They have proven their strength by running them in 3400lb twin turbo 522ci Vipers running (2) T88 turbos into the 7's with IRS!

I think most honda styling is boring but the s2000 has a very sleek european roadster look.....its only problem was it was 2 slow to compete with most euro's, i guess you solved that problem.

no, i wouldnt put one in a GTO. who would. i have had my ls1 in my 240sx for almost a year with a j30 diff with no problems. if you look around at some of the stuff people are running with nissan rears you will see they are pretty tough. axles will break before the rear does.

Like these guys have said, you will not need anything better than an R230. I would be amazed if you broke it.

Very cool swap...have always loved the S2Ks.
