Default Oil Pan Dilemna

I know this has probably been beat to death, but....

I dropped the 4.8 in my '79 Malibu today and the stock truck pan is way too low for comfort. It hangs 3+" below the crossmember. From what I've gathered, I have a few options.

1. Modified F-body pan from S&P or other vendor (about $250).
2. LH8 pan, but it is only 3/4" shorter, so I'll probably pass on this option (abount $180-250).
3. Cadillac CTS-V. Some think this will fit with no problems. No one can say for certain, so I'm scared to dump $200+ into an unknown.
4. Moroso pan. About $300 with pickup + you have to run remote filter setup, so that adds about $50-100 more.

Am I leaving anything out? Has anybody run the CTS-V pan in an application that would let me know if it would work in my application?

Here's a couple shots of the truck pan in my Malibu:

That pan is WAY too low. You're going to decapitate ants with that thing.

Well, you could modify (ie shorten) your truck pan. You may want to use a remote oil filter if the filter hangs too low too. If you can weld, it's quick and easy!

The oil pan thread has good information about dimensions, but not really anything helpful to specific applications. I'm really curious about the CTS-V pan.

I don't have the equipment to weld aluminum. Although, I could probably find someone locally to do it for me. I'd prefer to go with a known working application.

To me, it appears that it may be a "better" solution to cut and box your crossmember and then use the LS2 Corvette pan. S10 guys do this all of the time.

odds are that if the truck pan physically fits, then an unmodified f-body pan will too. just remember that whichever pan you do decide on you will also need the matching dipstick and tube, oil pickup tube, and windage tray. they're all different for each pan.

Not sure about your 79', how much difference is the 79 to the 70-72 A-Bodys... but the CTS-V pan does work out ok for the earlier A-bodys.

I think it would fit in the G-bodies. John B said he thought it would also, but doesn't know that for a fact. From what I've read on here, it appears that the CTS-V hangs below the crossmember also. Can you verify this? Any photos?

The moroso pan is pretty cheap at 200 dollars but we are out of stock on the unit right now.

Default CTS-V Oil Pan

depending on the thickness of the adapter plates, which motor mount (short/wide vs Tall narrow) and the Frame mounts you use. that will change the height of the engine and how much the CTS-V oil pan hangs below the front Cross Member.

Mind is just a bit more then 1"...

This is using 1/4" plates, tall and narrow engine mounts. short and wide frame mounts.

If you need more photo and if I have them.. let me know..

Heres a couple pics of my uncut f-body pan in my El Camino.

Malibu Racing: it looks like your mounts position the engine a little higher in the frame, so the CTSv pan may be an option. On my car the f-body pan is about 5/16 to 1/2 above the bottom of the crossmember. The tight spot will be on the sides of the CTSv pan where it slopes down towards the sump.

I've been looking at pictures and measurements of the CTS-V pan and the Moroso pan. The slope shape of the CTS-V and Moroso pan are very similar. I know that the Moroso pan fits, as a member of my forums is running one on a 6.0 transplant with the same motor mounts I am using. Also, as you state G-body, I am running the Transdapt motor mount adapters, which seem to mount the engine a little higher. That may prevent it from hanging below the crossmember. I ordered the CTS-V pan from the local dealer. It's much cheaper than the Moroso pan and pickup, plus I won't have to run a remote oil filter. I'll be the guinea pig and let you guys know if it works on a G-body.

Why not just go with an Autokraft pan. Oil Filter stays in the same location. Pickup comes with the pan.
