Thumbs up 275 DR Build: 485 CI LSX and Nitrous

I originally posted this in the Nitrous Oxide section last week but thought I would put here as well. I will plan on updating this as progress is made. Kurt Urban is building the motor and Theo Dec at Wizard Racing in Sacramento, CA is doing all chassis and tuning. Thanks and the next 4 months are going to be long.

Mods maybe would can consolidate and make a Build Sticky? Thoughts? Thanks.

A month ago I posted on here regarding Aluminum vs Iron Blocks for max effort drag racing nitrous engines. A lot of you had some great comments and asked me to make a thread when I got started. So, today was day 1 and money will be wire transfered tomorrow morning to get started on the block and crank. These 2 pieces will take the longest to manufacturer... about 10-12 weeks.

Anyhow, here are some details on the car and engine being built.

Car:
2002 Pontiac Trans Am WS6. Its being built for 275 Drag Radial classes in PSCA and WCHRA on the West Coast. I will be taking the car either this weekend or next to start on all the chassis and safety improvements to get it cert'd beyond 8.50. This car already has a great foundation to work with but we need to do even better and we will!

Engine (just some basic stuff):
485 Cubic Inch LSx motor, 4.165" bore and 4.450" stroke
Dart LS Billet Block
Callies 4.450" Center Counterweight Crankshaft
Wiesco pistons
Dyers 300M Forged Rods
All Pro LSWr LS7 heads by West Coast Cylinder Heads
Jesel Belt Drive
Jesel custom shaft mount rockers
60MM camshaft in raised location
Custom Dailey Dry Sump
Custom Tunnel Ram intake w/ 2 4500 TB's and plumbed for 2 Direct Port Fogger systems for 4 stages Dry

I will update as progess is made and I hope to get pictures as the motor and car are being built.

Thanks for looking!

Not sure, whatever it needs to run the #'s to win. The 275 tire is definitely a limitation so we will try and see what works best. It should be able to handle 600+ worth of spray as long as the tune up is right.

600+ ... better buy some extra pistons.

Intresting choices were made, I'm intrested in the bore/stroke combo, I wasn't aware that the lsx block could handle that much stoke. Also the raised cam location, intrested in how that is going to be done... definitely post up some info on this if you can.

Everything else looks killer

Dart billet block ... they can do just about anything with it.

I think its a 9.8 deck block (tall deck) and they raise the cam location to allow for the larger stroke.

Aah nevermind I missed the dart billet part. That damn block is 10 grand I'd love to take that route, but it's not happening. At the rate I'm going, the RHS will probably be out by the time I get to the motor

You know it Wayne. Going to have 4 extra's on hand just in case. Chances are we will never hit it with that much but we could. All I care about is running the #'s to be competitive and the less nitrous to accomplish that the better.

Deck is around 9.80 and finished will be 9.75ish or so which allowed Kurt go with a big stroke and still have a piston design that can take the punishment Nitrous will dish out. I still can't believe I am doing this. I think I've lost my mind and gone mad...

Don't be sad dude! You have a sick car that works great! I was thinking of using the RHS but the Tall Deck verision won't be out till next year and we needed that to run a strong piston with the stroke we are using. Believe me I'm not exactly stoked about paying that much for a Dart block but figured we might as well go for it! My window of opportunity is closing because kids will probably be on the way in 2-3 years... Amazing how we start using different metrics to measure our life as we get older. 5 years ago it wouldn't of crossed my mind to think oh shit I better do this now before I have kids... LOL

My wife's on my ass about that one too..... hence why the RHS will certainly be put before I'm ready to buy

Very nice build. I take it your going to run the WCHRA 275 class? Or? If WCHRA, there some pretty fast cars in that class...I think the 600+ shot is about right . None the less, thats a monster your building and I like it alot...

Yes, that is correct. We are planning on running the 275 class in WCHRA and Wild Street in PSCA. There are some very fast cars in both classes and I'm hoping once we complete this project we don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

Sounds like a sick setup. Is the Dart block stronger than the LSX?

Any comparison would be tough as they are two different types of block.
The Dart advantage for Eric:
High cam location.
High deck height.
Long sleeve length.
Sleeve can be replaced. (nitrous oops possibility)
7/16 main studs.
1/2 head studs.
Doweled and interference fit main caps.
Lightweight.
Piston oilers to cool crown.
Upper extra head bolt bosses extend to crossbar.
Coolant holes in deck at min dimension.
Headstuds connected to cylinder.
