Default Power Steering Delete

Can the power steering be removed without having to get a manual steering rack, and what can be done to remove the pump?

I removed mine before I had the manual rack put in. I looped the fluid line and it worked fine.

My car was like that when I bought it and it sucked as far as driving. It was so hard to turn. Installed the Madman rack and everything is good now.

Just cut the lines get an insert fitting from the plumbing department at home depot along with some radiator clamps and connect the two together. Get some electrical ties and tie the looped line out of the way.

You can remove the pump and pulley.

It will be harder to steer this way but I drove mine daily for over a year with it looped before I put in the manual rack, really sucked in parking lots.

I did mine due to the power steering pump going out, I wouldn't recommend it on a DD for power gain or weight loss, it will be minimal in both cases. But if you are building a race car go for it.

Even with a manual rack it was a pain to drive untill I put a small 205 tire up front. So I would not recommend a manual rack either unless your going with a smaller tire.

What about a daily driver with skinnies up front? I think my power steering pump is going out. It is whining REALLY bad, but isn't leaking any fluid. I'd rather remove it and throw a short belt instead of buying another pump.

Mine had a power steering cooler which leaked and let water into the PS and PS fluid into water. It has been so long now but I am pretty sure I just ran a short belt.

You could drive on skinnys but I don't recommend it. I am on 205 up front on a 6" rim and am using a low profile road race tire from Nitto. It works pretty good but I couldn't imagine my primary stopping power being on a 3" tire especially in the rain. (mine isn't driven in the rain anymore) Other than that I would imagine it wouldn't take much to turn a car with skinnes and no PS(as far as difficulty to turn the steering wheel)

Man it has been so long since I did it, but I am pretty sure that was what I did. It has been off of the car for about 4 or 5 years now. Here is a pic of where the PS pump used to sit. Notice the cut off pulley mount on the altenator bracket.

I have been driving the car on skinnies every day since the beginning of March. That's not my worry, it's pulling into parking spaces, up to the gas pump, etc. If it is easy to turn the wheel with skinnies & a looped stock rack, I might as well just do it.

Couple of horsies. I did it mainly to clean up my engine bay and make it much easier to work on the car.
I don't reccomend this for a daily driver unless your hardcore. I have mine looped with skinnies but I only drive it on weekends during the summer.

Not sure but all I did was go to auto zone or advanced and tried different size belts until I found one that fit, The guys where I am were cool and just kept trading me out belts until I found one that fit.

Very few, because most of the load from power steering comes when you turn the wheel, in the quarter you really do not turn so it won't be that big of a deal.

So you loose a little weight and gain a little power.

There isn't very many mods out there that make a huge difference out side of a cam or power adders. Most of the rest is nickel and dime stuff that just adds up over time.

52.5", 6 rib belt is what you need if you have the stock crank pulley. If you have an underdrive, I don't know.

I gained a little over 2 tenths in the 1/4 for bypassing the power steering and got about 3 mph
