pics not super clear on the tip of the plug (more focased onthe threads.lol) but it looks as if the timing mark is still just a tad high. probably OK, but id take .5 more out to be safe. id say the tunup will change a bit after you get the proper load on it with a good trans tho. good luck. and start saving those pennies for that trans...
Here is a link to some more 5.3's with ls6 cams, it seems this may be normall for the 5.3 and ls6 cam?!? So maybee there isn't a problem, I am going with the th400 anyway.
OK guys the th400 is in but havent had a chance to test it out yet.... The driveshaft is to short by about an 1 to 1/2".... The driveshaft i have is for a th400 to 12bolt.... I have a 9" figured it would work but it doesn't....
So i have to find a pace to lengthen a driveshaft for me on the cheap cuz im F-ing broke as hell!
yeah, you would be better off to find one too long and have it cut down. its cheap to have them cut down, but basically building a new shaft to make it longer...

did you tear apart your old trans to see if it truely was failing?
nope.... and im not really to sure it was the tranny.... is there a way to tell if its a built tranny???? it has writing on the housing and tailshaft and stuff, i dont think they have that from the factory...

My friend does have a couple old chevy driveshafts that are pretty long sitting in his garage i might go that route...

I dont know squat about transmissions...
if its grease pencil writing, sounds like a junk yard part

no tranny fluid seems fine, bright red, smells fine... I think im gonna keep the tranny for my 88 mustang lsx swap i want to do here soon... the reason im questioning it being built is because it has lived through ALOT of abuse 2 turbo setups, and 2 na setups.... it was always kept cool though.

TH400 is installed... have to get a Driveshaft now...
was just reading a thread on some other site where they were talking about oil pressure and preload:
even with the smallest amount of preload, with high oil pressure, and especially higher RPM where the lifter is getting filled quicker, it has a tendency to overcome some of the spring pressure and leave the valves open
IDK seems interesting... im am running a 10/30 conventional oil right now and oil pressure is like 60+ at 3000 rpm up... im gonna switch to mobile 1 synthetic oil and a lighter weight and see if it will help... also waiting on a pushrod length checker.
If my preload is not right then it can be causing some valve float also...
Alot of experienced people say its valve float. So im gonna try some things and if it doesn't help ill buy some springs.
havent made a pull all the way up past 5500rpm in 3rd to see if the car loses power yet because i get a horrible vibration at 80.... still need a 3/4" longer driveshaft

If I were you, I wouldn't drive it until you get the correct length driveshaft. Think about it, if you some how make your rear suspension drop enough you could pull that driveshaft out and stick into the ground and then you are airborne. That's just me though.

Ya I tested for that, jacked the car up and let the rearend hang to seen if it was so short that it would fall off... the driveshaft i have would probably work actually but i am gonna get a new driveshaft anyway. I just want to make 100% sure i have as much engagement on the tailshaft as i can for the track.
It would be a really bad deal if it came off lol, althought the spohn DS saftey loop would save me, I would hope anyway lol.
how do you like your th400? I really dont mind the 3000 rpm at 65mph... but im not really driving all that far either about 20miles when i drive it to work.
I still might go lower than 3.70's but im not sure yet. might wait to see if i run out of gear at the track... I think it will be just right with 28" tires.
