Default Ultimate Street Car (On A Budget)

My goal here was to have a car with ultimate power that still retained good street manners, reliability, handling, and, as always, staying within a reasonable budget.

As many will note, I ended up buying Patrick G's car off of here about 2 years ago but opted NOT to get it with the turbo installed. After a TON of research, I finally decided that a centri blower was really the right choice for me. After having a lot of fun with this car on spray, it was time to step it up and finish making the car what it was built for. I ended up getting a D-1SC kit from my buddy for a great price and so the adventure begins...

I opted to max out the D-1SC at 16 psi and I'm shooting for as close to 800rwhp as possible as low 10's, possibly high 9's. This meant stepping up the fuel sytem to accomidate the extra power, but with the help and advice of some members on here, I was able to build my own system using dual Walbro 255's in the tank and using the stock feed line and evap line as a return. I added a set of 60 lb. injectors and some fast fuel rails on top to easily support my needs.

Here is what I had to work with at the beginning of this stage of the project:

Motor
-HKE forged 347 short-block w/Ross power-adder pistons
(15.8cc dish, 3.905” bore), Ackerly & Childs nitrous/turbo rings, King rod
bearings, Scat I-beam rods, & ARP head & main studs.
*Built to handle over 1000 rwhp (2k miles)
-Cloyes double roller timing set w/Torrington bearings
-Rollmaster timing chain
-Manton pushrods (7.505” long, 0.120” wall, 5/16 restriction)
-Comp R lifters
-Yella Terra Ultra Light 6645 1.7 shaft-mounted rockers
-AFR 225 heads w/8019 spring upgrade milled to 59cc (ported
by Tony Mamo)
-FAST 90mm intake (porting by Tony Mamo)
-Nick Williams 90mm throttle body (ported by Tony Mamo)
-Comp Cams 224/230 .609/.604 113LSA +2 turbo cam
-Ported LS6 oil pump
-LS6 PCV valley pan conversion
-2002 Z06 85mm MAF
-ASP under-drive pulleys
-Kooks 1 3⁄4” long tube stainless headers
-Custom 3” off road y-pipe with Burns high velocity
merge-y-collector
-4” QTP stainless cutout w/DMH electric valve
-Racetonix plug & play fuel system
-Accel 42lb. Injectors
-Nitrous Express dry kit (150 shot)

Drivetrain
-Six Speeds Inc. Stage II T-56 (2k miles)
-Textralia Exo-Skel twin-disc clutch
-Tick Performance adjustable master cylinder
-Fully built GM 10-bolt w/3.73 gears

Suspension
-Sam Strano 1.2” lowering springs
-Koni 4/4 single adjustable shocks, front/rear
-Strano 35mm front sway bar
-Strano 22mm rear sway bar
-UMI double-adjustable poly-rod PHB
-BMR adjustable lower control arms

Here is the motor before:

This setup made 449 rwhp and 414 rwtq on 87 OCTANE and 602 rwhp and 626 rwtq on a 150 dry shot. the 9.2 compression along with the impressive flow numbers of this motor should make it come alive on boost.

I considered keeping the spray, but decided that dual power adders was more of a hassle than it was worth and so I pulled out all the nitrous stuff.

Now, on to the project...

Before I went into this blower install, I had become tired of reoccurring clutch issues and other things associated with the 6 speed. After some thinking, I came to the conclusion that an auto would be the right choice for me for its consistency and reliability, stop and go driving, and the fact that it would be much easier to manage at this level of power. I ended up getting the T-56 swapped for a built 4L65E with a lock-up Precision 4k stall.

Here is the blower kit that I bought from my buddy that started the whole thing. It looked ok, but I'll definitely be changing a few things about it.

First thing, the big front mount intercooler had to be installed.

Next, we ditched the blow off valve in favor of a big ATI Race Bypass.

Next the underdrive pulleys were removed and the ATI Super Damper harmonic balancer was installed and the blower was mounted to fit the piping.

Next, the Snow Performance meth kit was wired up with the pump behind the intercooler bracket. Also, he washer fluid tank was also tapped and used as the meth reservoir in favor of the small reservoir that came with the kit.

Next, the tank was dropped and the new dual Walbro pumps were fitted inside the bucket.

Next, the fuel rails and injectors were installed and the -6 braided lines were mated to the stock line.

Next, the Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator was mounted and installed

"Ultimate" and "budget" don't belong in the same thread unless it is an "ultimate budget build" lol. Looks like quite the build sheet for a budget build.

Well, no corners are gonna be cut, but things like the fuel system, the cheap Procharger kit, and good deals on used parts are what made this possible in the first place. If I thought I would have to spend $10k to do this , it would have remained on the backburner, but I'll be far below that when it's all said and done. That's also why it's in (), because Im not totally limiting myself but it is shaping up to be a relatively cheap build considering just how much I'm doing.

I wish I had your job, if your gonna throw a D1 kit on your car and push 800rwhp none of that will EVER be "cheap".

I would eliminate half of those couplers with welds if at all possible. Maybe spend a little coin on some tbolt clamps and get rid of the worm clamps.

Very nice build. Amazing starting platform having Pat G's old car. Very nice parts and should move out! I'll enjoy watching this one come together!

Man, you read my mind. Those coolers are eBay JUNK. I'm gonna get a few more pieces of pipes and weld some together to eliminate all the unncessary small pieces, then I'm going over to all 4 ply couplers with t-bolt clamps all around.

I see a lot of setups on here using hump couplers on both sides of the intercooler, is there a reason for that?

Nice start to a good looking bulid, but if your buddy has any more of those D1SC kits for that price let me know.

Haha, naw, he had bought it for his car, but then changed his plans. He owed me so we worked out a good deal on it.

Thanks Jerry. Actually Michael (1999ssls1) is the one helping me with this and he has your old Incon turbo kit on his T/A, which was the original plan for this project. However, he decided to keep it on his car and then I came across the deal on this blower.

My original plans were to have Vengeance tune the car, but they are now saying that they are totally backed up and can't get to it until sometime after January. We were actually thinking of contacting you to see if you would be interested in tunig it. There is another shop that I'm talking to about it, but it's still not set in stone who will actually do the tuning.

Wow, this blows! I just got word that our local quarter mile track, Memphis Motor Sports Park, is officily closing down for good. This Saturday will be it's last day open then they are closing the gates. Thus really suck because I wasn't able to take my car to the LSX Shootout this year, which was held here, because of this ongoing project. Now, when I do get it finished, I'm not even gonna have a place to run it to see what it can really do. There are a couple 1/8th miles tracks within an hour or two of here, but I don't have a clue where another full quarter track is.

they're closing for good? You would think the revenue from big events like the nmra/lsx thing would have been enough to keep them alive.

Well, the word is that Dale Jr. was gonna buy the facility and keep it alive and expand even further by building an even bigger oval track on the premises, but apparently he backed out at the last minute so now they are having to shut it down. They are going to keep it the same for a few years though in hopes that someone else will come along and buy it and keep it going, but if no one does, it will be torn down and the land will be sold, most likely for more factories to be built there.
