Default Stock In-Tank Fuel Pressure Regulator

Here's a quick one:

I'm running a fuel pressure regulator up by the fuel rails, so I need to remove the in-tank reg. For those that did it, did you gut the in-tank regulator, or remove it completely?

If you gutted it, how did you do that?

Thanks!

Steve

I'm lost, why do you have to remove the in-tank regulator? Can't you just leave it there? Thanks for helping me understand.

It's an extra restriction that doesn't need to be there.

Because it will only allow 58 psi out of the tank. If you're shooting for 65 psi at the rail, or even 59 psi you're never going to see it with a reg in the tank preset for 58.

I'm still confused...I have a fuel pressure gauge and it reads between 63-68 psi at the rails when the car is running. Never has it ever been even close to reading 58 psi. Does this mean I have an aftermarket fuel pump in the car? Stock should be 58? I've never upgraded the fuel pump, but I'm not the first owner either. From other threads on this site I've heard that people claim ~65 psi at the rails on the stock fuel pump. Are you certain about this 58 psi number?

Stock fuel pressure is 58 psi...chances are, you have an aftermarket pump. I upgraded my rails and the lines that feed them, and my pressure went DOWN with the stock pump (hence the front mount regulator, and my question).

So...to those that have done it...i.e. ChevyChad, Lonnie, Nasty N8...remove the regulator completely or gut it?

First, to clarify the regulator does not control fuel out of the tank, it allows a portion to bleed back into the tank for pressure control.

As far as leaving it in there, you cannot with a front mount regulator.

What is better, to gut or remove????? You can do either with good results.
I remove them from the tank for the best unrestricted flow, but they are hard to remove without breaking the delicate plastic bucket. To gut the regulator, remove the metal band surrounding the 2 halves & take off the metal end, leaving only the black plastic half. This should be all you need to do.

Welp...the regulator is out without breaking the bucket, so I'll just leave it that way. If I blow up my car, I'll let you know. Thanks Lonnie!
