Default I have another question. What about gear whine?

OK, so I'm pretty sure I'll be going with the Strange 12 bolt and 4.30's, on the LSX 454 M6. The thing I'm worried about is the issue of gear whine. How likely is it to happen? I won't be racing or doing clutch dumps at 5000rpm or anything. Just street & highway driving with a little throttle goose once and a while for kicks. I'll be on high performance summer tires (Michelin Pilot PS2) maybe DRs btw. And if I do get gear whine, how easy is it to fix?

Who has the Strange 12 bolt and what do you think of it? GMMG uses it on the DH cars, not sure about the others in their stable though but I would think it would be good enough to handle a lot.

I have a Strange 12 bolt. Never whined till a trip to the track. Gets louder every time I go too.

Really? Damn. What kind of numbers are you putting down, HP/Ftlbs. wise? I won't be racing or anything like I said. Just occasionally giving it a little gas once in a while.

Is it a easy fix? Expensive? Just would like to know.

I've had it since it was a bolt on car. Now makes about 400rwhp. Only way to stop the whine is to rebuild it. I guess I will when my drag racing days are over. Doesn't bother me now tho.

OK, Do you foresee a problem with it for someone who isn't going to race? Just normal street/highway driving as a DD?

No problem, but why not just keep the 10 bolt and save $2,600 if no racing or dumps?

Would the 10 bolt hold up or be OK with the 454? If so I'd probably hold off and upgrade it at a later date. I don't have the car yet and I won't be putting the LSX in for a while after I get the car. Like at least a year or so to save the $$$.

12 bolt will be dead silent until you take it to the track and do some 5k dumps then you will start to get gear whine. If you want to dump it and race it and take abuse with that 454 then get a S60 or a 9" and step up to your 4.56s we were talking about in the other post. Look through the threads Exotic Perfomance Plus had mentioned what causes the whine on the 12 bolt.

Yeah I will look at what Exotic Performance has posted. I really don't see myself racing the car, I like seeing other cars do it but I don't really want to beat on mine. Ha ha. Other than a few good stomps on the throttle when merging on the highway or stuff like that.

Yeah I looked at that one on your site actually. I"ll be keeping that 9" in mind. What I'll probably do is after I get the LSX in I'll just make sure I take it easy with it and then upgrade the rear end a little later. I won't be racing anyway so the stock rear should be OK for a while. But I do what to upgrade it though, I'd rather have more strength than I need than not enough. Thanks again guys.

My 12 bolt with the 3.73s was dead quiet, tons of 6k dumps on slicks. I just put 4.11s in and have a vibration, i dont think it is related though. Check my other post in this section. One question though, why go with a lsx 454 and not race it. hell a cam and heads car sounds great for what you want to do with it. Or maybe a 402/408 build, will have great grr down low like you want and be a lot less $$$

Yeah I know what you mean, I was originally going to do a LS3 427 but as I was looking on the TSP site I happen to check out their LSX short block and thought hey for a bit more I could go with the big boy. Ha ha. So I don't know. On one hand yeah I do want to do it and it would be cool to have the 454 but it is going to be a little $$$. How much diff is there (besides cost) in a 454 compared to say a 427? I don't really know.
