I'll tell you, 5/8 arent going to work. Id think you would be safe with 1/2, 90% of folks dont need anything bigger than that. Stock studs are 12mm, 1/2 is just a hair bigger.

if you really wanted to do it you just need to machine the rim.

but, for a stock wheel, 1/2" is going to be the most common available with lugnuts to fit the stock wheel without mods.

novi357 on yellowbullet has a mustang coupe with stock 10th ann. cobra rims.
he machined his rims out and runs 5/8 studs on the back.
runs 8's on 17"
its a pretty sweet ride.
i guess it would depend on how much material of the wheel you could cut out and be safe.

ok look at the three pictures.

first is stud 5/8" stud in stock rim
second is stud and nut in stock rim
third is socket over stud in stock rim

so does this mean a 5/8 will work in stock rim?

a 5/8 stud uses a 15/16 socket if that helps.
i think its all too much work really. not impossible, just different.

damn. id have never thought it would have fit in the stock hole.
you would have to machine the inside of the rim flat so the washers could sit on it.
OR
you could get real trick and have some washers made that look like a nitrous jet so you wouldnt have to machine your wheel.
you could use the reg washers on drag wheels at the track, and then throw your stock wheels on with no modifications if you ever wanted to unload the wheels.

if you only hit it up twice a year, id never worry about changing them out for a track outing.
on the other hand, thats a good idea to have them drilled for both so you dont have to pay for machine work later.

5/8 studs will not work on the majority of stock wheels, i know because i removed the 5/8 studs on my 9" rear for that matter, also finding the proper lug nut with proper angle once u open the holes up on the wheels is damn near impossible and very expensive if u do find some. Id swap to a smaller stud. I thought about machining spacers once i got the holes reamed out so i could still use the moser lugs that came with it, and i decided it wasnt worth the hassle.
