I had a belt squuek on my Z28 and I tried belt dressing...that made it even worse! I had to buy a new belt. Sometimes you can spray a bit of sillicone and it will help.

I don't get it. Doesn't a can of that shit cost about the same as a new belt?

i never understood why people use belt dressing. it only costs $15 for a new belt and maybe takes 15 min to install. and how does dressing a belt stop a pulley from squeeking?

Early in the summer the alternator belt began to occasionally slip on my 1992 Dodge Ram. My 84 year old snowbird (winters in Fla.) neighbor offered me some belt dressing, said he had a couple of cans in his garage. Knowing this cheap but good guy that the newest can was purchased in the 1980's, I declined and just only had to reset the tesion on the belt as it had slipped.

Spray that crap all over...no way!

GM belt is over 4x more than that. Belt dressing doesnt stop a pulley from squeeking, but if you have an old belt with hairline cracks it may squeek.

I have never seen a quality SERPENTINE belt for $6.00, sorry! The GM belt are as follows:
AC BELT part number 19172681 $24.43
MAIN ACCESSORY BELT 12569527 $48.09

So I don't know where you get your belts but GM belts are not $6.00.

I put new belts on when I did my underdrive pulley and all Napa had was there crappy as belts. The A/C belt started to squeek a week after I put it on. I've tried Belt dressing and silicone sprays but they both made it worse! I then tried Syl Glyde and it works great but only lasts about a week. It stays on and dosent mess up my engine compartment. I will be replacing it the belt with a better one probably next spring.

Napa makes 2 lines of belt. The cheap ones, and the premium ones. There is a huge difference between them.

Its supposed to be used sparingly...not spraying the whole can on it!! They serve their purpose quite well. If you expect the thing to save you from buying a new belt you must be quite a moron, IMO. It even says it right on the can but I expect some dont even bother to fucking read.

I've used belt dressing and it worked just how I thought it would. It stopped the squeaking belt, which is all that i wanted.

How are you greasing the pullies??

The tensioner and idler pullies use sealed bearings, you can't grease them...

These sealed bearings can be greased quite easily. There is a write up somewhere on LS1tech, but it goeas something like this:

Once you remove the pullies (4 total), you can pop the dust seal off with a tiny flat screwdriver to reveal the ball bearings inside. Clean them, grease them, and re-install.

Of course if they are too dried out, rusted, pitted, etc., you have to buy a new pulley.

I've never had any problems with gatorback belts on any of my cars. No squeaks, squeals.. nothing.

Sometimes price does dictate quality.
