both should be about the same. GC is a thicker oil so their 30W is closer to a 40W while mobil 1 is a thinner oil so it's 40W should be closer to a 30W. each should yield similar results. FWIW, per patman's suggestion, the only mobil 1 oil i'd run is their 0W-40.

i wouldn't put mobil 1 5W-30 in my LS1 if it was free. not after patman's analyses.

let's get something straight: mobil 1 is good oil. mobil 1 5W-30 is good oil. it's just not good for an LS1. mobil 1's 5W-30 isn't a true 30 weight, it's closer to a 20 weight. it's too thin for an LS1. that is why our LS1's tick, consume oil and sound like a sewing machine. most people use mobil 1 and it's too damn thin for the LSx line!

switch to german castrol 0W-30. it's a thicker oil and better suited for the LSx line. you'll be amazed how much quieter your engine is. it's more like a 40 weight mobil 1 oil. the only mobil 1 i'd put in my car is 0W-40 or 5W-40. i'd never use their 30 weights, they're like water.

if you have tick or that sewing machine sound, try GC 0W-30. my engine is amazingly more quiet than when i bought the car and it came with XXX oil in it. the only noise out of my engine bay is the belt noise. 2,500 miles later and it's still pretty clean too. i'm a believer.

ask patman, he'll tell you. he runs german castrol 0W-30 for 9,000 miles in his corvette and his analyses come back saying the oil could go longer. it just may be the best oil out there, especially for the LSx.

They don't, only Autozone sells it (and there is a recent post about an online site that sells it too)

In Canada you can get it at Walmart and Canadian Tire though.

can you get some GC 0W-30? it's far superior to all mobil 1 oil. it's actually a tad cheaper too. the 0W-40/5W-40 would be my second choice but if there's an autozone around you, you're better off with the german castrol.

hands down, GC 0W-30 is the best. MAKE SURE IT SAYS MADE IN GERMANY ON THE BACK. if it says made in the usa, do not buy!

if you can't find GC 0W-30, get mobil 1 0W-40 or 5W-40. i would probably buy 0W-40 since it would give you better startup temperature, run better in the winter and still thicken up the same when it gets hot. just my opinion on that one, i have no real data pointing 0W-40 is better than 5W-40. i'd have to ask patman to chime in on that one

0W-40 mobil 1 is better to run when cold. it has a lower freezing temperature and provides better startup protection due to the fact that it immediately cycles through the engine where thicker oils cannot.

GC 0-30 all the way, i ran 10-30 m1 15K mile formula, and now GC 0-30. No contest, I like the GC. Motor is queter and oil pressure a little higher. GC also uses no viscosity improvers because the base oil is really good.(Patman can clarify)

Quick Reply: mobil 1 or GC synthetic, higher oil pressure
