Default Throttle Body and oil pan questions

I was replacing the water pump on the 99TA and noticed a few things.. the throttle body flap had build up on it.. and when i removed the TB noticed that there was build up behind it also.. now im new to the TA and not familiar enough to determine what may be causing this.. now i know that the car has over 100,000 miles on it.. wasnt taken care of to much, besides the regular oil changes.

Here are 2 images of what im talking about.. can anyone offer suggestions on what to check or do to help with this.

Also wanted to know if its easy to complete a oil pan gasket replacement alone as a weekend thing.. i have heard you have to jack the motor up in order to do the replacement..

If there are any sites that show or list out the steps that woudl be great..
im use to working on the old school motors.. those were easy enough to take off the pan and replace pretty quick..

Can anyone offer some suggestions? If i need to lift the motor out, i finally have a engine lift.. and can do it next weekend. just want to make sure i have to go thru all that before actually doing it.. and since ill be down there, ill be checking and replacing any other gaskets that need replacing, i know she has some leaks so i can clean everything up during the week and check for leaks before starting the work..

thanks.

If you have a K&N filter that could explain the oil buildup on the front of the tb blade. The pcv valves on these cars are notorious for allowing oil past them and into the intake. A cheap way to fix it is to get some rubber hose and a cheap small air&oil separator for air tanks at Home Depot. Search "Home Depot catchcan" in the External Engine section and you can find some pics. Put it after the pcv valve and before the TB and it'll catch any oil that gets past the pcv valve before it goes into the intake.

One thing I'd do if I were you (cheap free mod) is pull out the EGR tube that's right behind your TB in the pic..be careful not to kink it when pulling it out..and take a dremel or something and cut off the part that hangs down into the intake blocking the airflow. Then just re-install the tube.

Not sure about the oil pan gasket in the car, I haven't had to do one of those yet.

To replace the oil pan gasket, you need to get some space between the engine and the k-member since it will only drop down about an inch before hitting it. Are you sure the it's leaking from the oil pan? The gasket is metal and reusable and I've never heard of leaky pans being a problem on these cars. Rear main seal is more likely.

well when the car wouldnt start some time back and having issues running when it would start we took it to a shop so we could find out what the issue was.. oil pan, main seal and something else i cant remember..

where can i find steps to replace the main seal?

I finally got a cherry picker so if i need to lift the motor, im set.. just need to see how much time i need to devote to the job..
