Default The Ring of Silence

Anyone here have the factory installed SLP Dual Dual exhaust with the Ring of Silence? If so, has anyone tried to remove the Ring of Silence and can offer sopme guidance on how to do it?

I have it and would like to take mine out.

Thanks,
Steve

So based on the pic. It looks like you cut the tailpipe off right at the muffler. And the ring is right by the muffler in the pipe. Does that sound about right? I take it then you had to have it rewelded?

Last question... Did you notice any difference in performance due to better flow and was it louder after the ring was removed?

Thanks for your help,
Steve

I only just found out about the ring. For the longest time I thought there was something wrong with my muffler, but then I found out it is something SLP did intentionally because of noise restrictions.

I was thinking about getting a Loudmouth II, but if does the trick it would a lot cheaper. and then possibly get a better than stock Y pipe.

I just want to be a little louder, but not too much.

Yeah, I'm just finding out. Apparently not all Dual Dual's have it, only the ones that were originally installed by SLP for certain years around 2000 (don't know the exact years).

There are basically two ways to tell if you have "The Ring", they are:

Is your drivers side tailpipe always cleaner then the passenger side?

If you straighten a wire clothes hanger and stick it up you drivers side tailpipe and it get hung up before you reach the muffler.

Then you have "The Ring"

This was a big deal years ago.... suprised so many have not heard of it before. IIRC, it was mostly on cars sold in California.

why blame gm or slp. if its a fed mandate on noise restrictions. i do know here in jersey there trying to pass another law on decibel levels, below 95.dont blame gm or slp, the blame goes toward your congressman or yourself. and by that i mean wether you vote or not. sorry if im off the subject.

But GM required it due to the law requirements at the time.
