my mechanic told me after i install the o ring and timing chain, he said to start the car for about 30 seconds or less to see if oil is leaking around the o ring would that be ok? he said oil wont splash much but a little bit.

When the seal is bad the pump sucks air. So even if the seal is leaking you would never see oil come out of it. Maybe after you shut the car off it would bleed down some and you could see it.

If the right one is installed and installed correctly it will work fine. I think its time for a new mechanic, that is one of the dumbest things I have heard.

Turbo6.0L, with the oil pressure readings you stated in your first post, I believe that there is nothing wrong with your oil pump or the o-ring. You have very good oil pressure at idle and while cruising.

I having the same issues. 04 gto with m6 motor in my nissan. I put a tr 230/224 reverse split cam, 925 comp springs, 7.4 pushrods. This was a kit i bought from thunder racing. When I start the car up in morning pressures between 40 and 45 psi. Once it warms up it runs at 36 to 38 psi at 800rpm. If i start to rev engine up around 1500 rpm its about 50 psi and anything above 6000 its 80 to 85 psi pressure.

I do get the same clacking noise from my engine. It starts out quite then starts to tick and after a while I can hear a slight louder ticking knock type of noise. From what I have read for last 2 days is that it can be push rod length/pre load or oil pump o ring. I never touched that on the cam install. Everyone has a different answer or opinion bassically. Some say ls1 motors always noisy after a cam, or no they should not make any noise what so ever.

I have driving with this cam for 120 miles cruising not taching it over 5500 rpm. I really want to check my pushrod lengths and preload with the measuring tool and possibly change my o ring to the nice new blue one. This ticking I hear.. will it damage the engine ?

I was able to get my oring replaced as well as put the pick up tube girdle on. Took the car for a 45 minute drive and so far I have no loud valve train noise. I can hear the roller tip rockers only now and maybe a little piston slap when cold. Oil pressure is a little higher when cold but seems to be about the same once warmed up. Biggest difference for pressure is that it is now way more responsive to RPM changes. I max out around 75psi but I can hit that now at around 3500 to 4000 RPM. Before it probably was around 5000 RPM. The oring I took out was blue not black like I stated earlier. The old oring appeared to have a small flat spot on it. I think the pickup tube might not have been perfectly centered in the oil pump. With only 1 bolt holding the pickup tube it is hard to make sure it is straight. The girdle is a must in my opinion. It was a pain in the butt to replace the oring and get the girdle on. I did have to drop the oil pan down until it was hitting the steering rack to allow enough clearance to get at it. So far so good and I hope it stays that way.

daftdrifting - I will agree that some valve train noise is normal. I have heard dozens of cars here at a local tuners with cam and head jobs with some ticking. Mine was a little louder so I was concerned. You need to check that preload before you tear anything apart. A quick check: Pick a cylinder. Roll the engine over until both exhaust and intake valves are closed. From the zero lash position you should get about 3/4 to 1 1/4 turns until rocker bolt is tight. If you are in this range you are fine. You could check it on a couple other cylinders as well.
A couple possible giveaways for the oring would be low oil pressure which you don't seem to have ( I didn't either) and valve train noise at the #7 cylinder ( I did have this). If your noise is oring related it is not supposed to have any long term effects. If preload is wrong you could have some issues.
Finally if you think you might have the famous piston slap noise you can unplug one fuel injector at a time to see if the noise goes away. To help pinpoint the noise I would suggest getting a mechanics stethoscope. It did help me to identify cylinder number 7. Good luck.

Well the noise cam back after 2 days. New oil must help keep it quiet. It turned out to be the push rods hitting the pass through holes int he cylinder heads. I clearanced them and the noise so far has been gone. I started up another thread to discuss this.

Sorry no pics. Forgot to take some. Yes it was the holes that the pushrods pass through.
