Default How can someone get a stuck lifter out??

My buddies ls1 has a collapsed lifter and we were trying to pull the cam to be able to punch the lifter through the bore but the cam will not come out because of the lifter. Any ideas?? I tried using some pliers on top the lifter while he stuck a screwdriver in the other side and tried prying it up, but there's no give. As mentioned, the cam won't twist out because one of the cam lobes is catching on that lifter. Even if we screw up the lifter bore I still don't know how we can get the damn thing out.

I'm guessing you have the head off and can't pull it out the top. Have you tried spinning the cam at all?

I've had this issue before on a Ford. I bought a tool that has two steel fingers that grip the top of the lifter then it had a slide hammer built into it. You hit the hammer over and over and eventually the lifter will release.

The Alchemist, yep we have got the motor sitting in the garage. And have tried pulling/spinning the cam, but the cam lobe(s) won't clear the lifter to get the cam out.

chas... thanks for the links. We haven't decided yet if we feel that one of those would work for us. I mean, the lifter is extremely stuck lol

Use penetrating oil around the lifter and use something to vibrate the lifter to get the oil around it. Then use the slide hammer. I just don't see another option.

It took me 4 hours of slide hammering to get a stuck lifter out. The metal surrounding the lifter had deformed due to excessive RPM and load.

Good luck.

As the fit is tight I would make sure I was pulling upward on the lifter as straight as possible. If its the slightest bit slanted in relatioship to the hole it won't come through bc of the tight clearance.

I guess it depends which lifter bore its in how to try and get it out. Its prolly broken in some way that is causing an interference that won't allow it to come up. Take a few pictures of where it is in the engine and maybe some one will have a few ideas. The cam is prolly bad too so it maybe possible to cut part of the cam away and push the lifter down.

depends on how its broke. if the roller is knocked off it and its mushroomed out on the bottom no slide hammer will get it out. trust me i tried. all it did was break the top part of the lifter off. if the came is spinning i see no reason why it wont come out. you may have to spin it as you pull it out so it doesnt catch the lobe of the cam, but again if its spinning then it should come out. then knock the lifter out the bottom.
