Default What 6.0 block for project ?

I've decided to build a 6.0 project motor for my Camaro. A buddy of mine just totaled his 01 or 02 (not sure) Chevy 3/4 ton truck with the 6.0 in it. The motor is still perfect, cranks with no issues. My question is that the block I need to start with for my project ? I plan to keep my LS1 in my Camaro while I gradually build this motor up from scratch. Meaning having the block sent out to the machine shop for boring and everything involved since I want to stroke it and all. That's not my concern right now though as I'll start with all that on down the line. I just want to make sure that this is the right block for my motor build is is what everyone starts out with when doing a 6.0 build. Thanks

Also I can buy the complete motor with accessories and all (not sure what I would need yet from the truck) for $500. Is that a good price for a 01-02 6.0 if this is the right starting point for me ?

The 6.0 truck blocks are all the same from 99-06. There are some piston, rod, and crank differences depending on year model and exact engine type(LQ9,LQ4,etc.), but the blocks are identical. $500.00 is a good deal for a complete 6.0, but if you are only using the block you can get one brand new from SDPC for $733.00.

OK great that helps alot. I was just thinking about buying the complete motor because I figured I could sell the heads and whatever else of any value off of it since I would be going with aftermarket heads and intake and what not. Out of curiosity, what do the stock factory heads from these motors bring and is there any value at all for the intake ? Thanks

You need to use the existing wire harness and computer that's in your car. I'm not sure what the heads are selling for and you'll be lucky if you get $50 for the intake assembly. You can search the for sale section and see what people are paying for the heads, and check out the exhaust manifolds as they are common for turbo setups.

If you can get the complete 6.0 with accessories for $500 then you have a great deal. I bought my '01 LQ4 for $500 without accessories.
If you are going to build a forged rotating assembly it makes good sense to buy a used 6.0 engine. You will start out with all the covers, bolting, sensors, etc. The 317 heads will sell for $100-$200 depending on miles. A stock 6.0 crank can bring another $75.

Just be ready for the final price tag on a decent 408 build. My $500 junkyard engine is now at a little over $4k for just the short block. And that is me doing all the work except for machining.

That's alot of very useful info. guys I really appreciate it. And yea I've got a good friend that will be building the motor for me. So I'll just be out the cash for all the parts.

Yeah Ive been trying to give away the truck intake...lol

317 heads normally go for 200.00 on craigslist around here.

What heads are you planning on using on your build?

Well I haven't really gotten that far yet. Still trying to figure everything out about these 6.0's. What would you suggest ? I've been told I should look into Dart, AFR, LS6.. But I don't have the slightest idea yet.
