Default Pennzoil Platinum oil analysis results

Here are the latest oil analysis results from my 98 Corvette

Analysis by Wearcheck Canada

7000 miles on oil
May 13 to Nov 4 (6 months)
87,000 miles on the car
Pennzoil Platinum 5w30
Wix oil filter
Vararam cold air kit (with a cotton gauze filter)
LS1 5.7L V8 engine
Daily driver with a lot of rush hour traffic
5 quarter mile runs
7qt oil capacity
1qt of oil added
Oil life monitor was at 0%

Iron 14
Lead 6
Aluminum 4
Copper 1
Chromium 1
Tin 2
Silver 0
Titanium 0
Nickel 0

Silicon 17
Potassium 0
Sodium 0
Boron 20
Barium 0
Calcium 3177 (nice!)
Magnesium 46
Moly 42
Phosphorus 732
Zinc 880

Fuel <2%
Glycol 0
Water 0

Viscosity
62.0 cst at 40c
11.0 cst at 100c

Viscosity Index 171

TBN 3.98

This is my first run with PP, and I’m pretty pleased with the results. It’s not quite as good as GC in the wear department, but the silicon level is a bit higher too, so that could account for some of the wear.

I definitely recommend this oil to LS1 owners!

Not sure what all the numbers mean without some other numbers to compare to, but I have been running it also.

No test as you have done, but I have not noticed anything that would not keep me from running it in the future.

Since I put on a HomeDepot oil sperator (as a catch can), I have added very little oil between changes.

I worked for Penzoil specifically for PP, and have seen some pretty amazing things from this stuff, Ive had it in the GTO since its first change. I still recomend it to everyone i know, even though im with another Oil company now.

I would like to see how it compares to royal purple. I use RP in both of my cars but the price is insane. If this was comparable I may start using this if it's cheaper.

Haha! Way to get the Patman fired up! RP is GARBAGE and he is the man to tell you why!

That's not good to hear! I have used it for several years with no problems but I would like to hear why he thinks it's so bad. My ears are always open to this subject

I hate RP, this is my first time using it and it will be the last. It does fine at first but when heat soaked i lose oil pressure like it never has before. Not dangerously low but lower than i would like, and lower than with any other oil. Not to mention that I get little puffs of smoke when WOT when before i did not.

RP sheets off the internals too fast at high RPM, leaving little to no protection on bearing surfaces. There are several Vendors, at least on CorvetteForum, that will NOT warranty any of their engine builds if RP is used. They make awesome transmission and rear end fluid, but their engine oil I wouldn't put in my lawnmower. Patman will get way more specific on you, but do a search under his name and royal purple.

The first and only time I used RP my engine blew up BAD. My Billet crank was cracked in 4 places and shot 2 Dyers rods out the block. I'll never buy that junk again. Same thing happened to a friend of mine as well.

i used it and after 1k miles it was already needing more oil and it has NEVER used oil. I put in GC and not only did it quit using oil, it also quit that light tapping sound for GOOD. I use GC only now.

When I ran RP in my wife's Honda it thinned out from a 5w30 to a 5w20 in less than 3000 miles, and engine wear was a lot higher than with all the other oils I've ran in her car.

I've actually gotten much better results using Castrol GTX in her car than I did with RP!

I've heard nothing but bad about RP. I'm all about GC... it's performed amazingly in my car!

Patman,

The information that you have provided here & on BITOG has been a blessing to my cars. Thank-you

BTW, I still have a few years supply of "Green" German Castrol.

Pennzoil Platinum is a good choice for me as it is readily available as opposed to GC which I have yet to find in 3.5 years of looking. I know I can buy it online from one of our vendors here, but it's close to $10/quart after you figure in shipping.

I have never ran anything in my car but Mobil 1 and had good results with but I recently switched to the Pennzoil Platinum and it seems to have quiet down the motor (valves noisey) and freed up the motor a hair (reving) and I have always ran regular Pennzoil in all my cars and trucks for over 15yr now with GREAT RESULTS and I am Pleased with the Pennzoil Platinum and plan on sticking with it.

wow ill defiantly never use royal purple, i was under the impression that was high grade stuff. so when you are refering to "GC" is that german castrol? if i cant find that local then pennzoil platinum is a good choice correct?
