Who had the worst luck trying to get to the shootout?
Hey guys, just wondering if anyone had more bad luck than we did trying to get to the shootout. My Duramax was leaking coolant for about a month and a half and we have been working on it trying to figure out what the hell it was. After getting it tore down the Mechanic found two pushed injector cups. He fixed that and we got the truck back about a week ago. Well everything was fine until two days ago my wife was driving the truck home and it blew coolant all over the side of the truck. We talked to the Mechanic and he said to go ahead and drive the truck but just keep a check on everything.
So i topped the coolant off and hooked the trailer up and took it for a test drive just to see how it would act. After a short 40 mile trip it blew coolant out again. I told my wife that there is now way i can risk driving that truck 12 hrs and it leave me stranded. So we hopped in my other truck and headed to town to BUY a used Duramax ive been looking at for a few weeks. I made it less than 5 miles down the road and hit a fucking deer!!!! So after all that my trip to the show has been canceled.
wow i thought losing a wheel on my truck was bad last year on way to shootout. retirieved the wheel from teh highway and kept going although short a few lugnuts lol. this year i am in a wedding so i can't go this year. went last two years. as long as they have it next year i will finally run my own car.

Well two years ago i was heading from starkville to memphis and my front right wheel fell off of my ta. Dad brought some wheel studs and the put the wheel back on good enought to put it on a flat bed. so i missed out, and spent my weekend fixing my car.
I had a helll of a time trying to borrow an enclosed trailer from buddies and it turned out to be a waste of time so I went out and bought a 2002 24' trailer. I got a decent buy on it but it sucked to have to drop the money on it just to make the event and not have to worry about my car getting stollen.
Then we had to change the plug on the trailer as it had drugg the road at some point and would not stay in the socket.

Sorry to hear about the hard luck stories. Worst thing that ever happened to me was that I was driving home by myself last year and 6 hours into an 8 hr drive I had the radio on full blast and pounded two monster drinks and put the cruise on at 110 for a long time... None of that was a good idea.
Damn sorry to hear about the hitting of the dear. We do have to give you credit for trying to even go out and get another track...Thanks for giving it the effort. Maybe next year will be better
Sorry you aren't going to make it Charlie. We made it here in about 11 hours... No hard luck stories here, but we have found out that a loaded down 28 ft trailer is a little more than a silverado ss wants lol. Its litterally sitting on the bumpstops its squated so much, but she did 70-80 mph all the way out here.

One of the guys I was with had his brakes changed on his 28 foot enclosed trailer for the event. After he and another guy spent all afternoon, evening, and night getting it ready and loading it up with the car, tools, etc., they took it for a test drive and noticed something wrong. WHat happened is the mechanic put the wrong rotors on it and the wheels were about to fall off. They had ot borrow someone else's trailer, unload everything adn re-load it until very late in the night. Thus, alot of stress and no sleep when it came time to leave a 4 am the next morning for LSX 2009.
My 02 Silverado that I tow the car with put up a good fight this year in an effort to miss the trip. The 5.3 that had been running fine decided to spin a rod bearing for no apparent reason about two weeks before lift off. I picked up a 5.3 from a salvage yard, swapped it out, and it only had ten psi oil pressure at idle. It would run fine down the road, but the needle would crash and the lifters would start tapping when the truck was at rest.
I was now running out of time and the only thing I could put my hands on was a 6.0. I swapped the tapping 5.3 for the 6.0 and drove the truck for a couple days to test it before we left. It was running good but had a rough idle and if left idling for more than 30 seconds the MIL would flash(good ole P0300). I swapped intake gaskets, spark plugs, plug wires, and fuel injectors to no avail. I decided to say screw it and just drive it up anyway.
The good news is as soon as I got outside Louisiana the engine started idling normally. I figured it may have had some stuck rings or something and the constant 75 mph on the highway did it some good. Then about 90 miles outside of Memphis I started to here a faint whining noise that soon became louder and extremely disheartening. I pulled onto the shoulder and was engulfed in a cloud of stinky burning gear oil. The rear end was smoking so bad it looked like the truck was on fire.
I limped to the next exit(about 1 1/2 miles) with the rearend feeling like it was about to sieze up and pulled into a truck stop. I ran in and got a quart of Lucas oil and then waited for the rearend to cool before attempting to mess with it. It only took about a 1/2 quart to fill it to the plug, so it wasn't excessively low. I jumped back on the highway and listened to the whine all the way into Memphis.
Before the trip home I went to the autoparts in Millington and replaced the burnt gear oil in the parking lot. The truck did great and made it home with no more issues other than the whine from the marred gears. The whole 5 days in TN the truck idled perfectly fine, but the first fuel stop in LA the rough idle came back. I have concluded the 6.0 just does not like the high humidity or Louisiana. It's been parked under the carport since we got back with a piece of cardboard under the rearend because the pinion seal is melted. All in all it was a pretty good trip.
Lost a rear lower shock bolt outside of st louis on my gto, found a dealership and they did not have one, closest one was 17 miles away, ended up putting a 1/2 bolt through it with a nylon lock nut on it, only lost 45min
