Racer's Lounge - What does it feel like to use Nitrous?

I'm just curious, i'm thinking about hooking up spray on the bird.. But what does it feel like to use it? Do you really get pushed into your seat instantly? Also is it true if your not flooring it, you can hit the nos and it won't activate until you gun it? Saw it on a video, i dunno.
Just curious :D

With respect to my setup, the car feels like it accelerates as if it was in a lower gear but I'm actually in a higher gear. I def feel a push from my 100 shot but its not fast & the furious with everything going blurry.

Many nitrous systems are setup to have a mechanical or electronic switch to only have it activate at WOT. There are many other safety equipment as well. Take a look at the nitrous FAQ section for tons of info.

Peak TQ on a typical nitrous setup occurs as soon as you activate it so the initial hit is very hard, especially on a big shot.

:jest:

I didn't run a lot on my truck, but when I did, it definitely woke it up. Felt like the truck was in a lower gear and it pushed me back into the seat a little bit.

The "only activated when WOT" is a safety feature.

my buddies old mac1 had a 150 shot, he would be in about 3rd cruising around 70 or so. he would punch it and flip the switch and it sounded like it opend up twice.

the speedo would shoot up pretty fast, but never really felt the back in the seat feel.

it was auto btw.

I had a 100 shot on my car. I had an arming switch and a momentary switch for activating it. No WOT switch, though it's not a bad idea! Anyway, you could feel the engine wake up, but it certainly didn't pin you in your seat.

Well,

I have a 430rwhp Auto car that i spray a 200rwhp shot through. First, I can tell you it is a HUGE PITA to get it right. Anyone that tells you otherwise has never ran nitrous. Once you have your kit set up correctly though, it's tough to beat. I never really ran a small kit on the car, and have only made passes on the 200 hit. When we first were ironing out some problems with the kit, it wouldn't recognize the WOT switch. So, I made like 10 passes thinking "o it's fixing to spray.....OOOOOOOoooooo....did it spray?!..."

Then, we made one TINY little adjustment....and made another pass. I seriously was NOT expecting the hit. hahaha

All I can compare it to is getting hit from behind by a car at a stop light. Mostly because i was not prepared at all, and had gotten comfortable with 1.57-1.60 60'. So, when the car hauled balls to a 1.40 60', WOW it hurt. I remember my back hurt for about 2 days! But, once you know it's coming, it really is like crack. Its an incredible rush. Mainly because you are so used to your car N/a. Then, snap on an INSTANT(remember nitrous damn near is instant peak power) 200 on your back and it's like a whole nother car.

For my car, It's the difference between a no wheels up, really really lazy 60 to a solid 1ft wheels up pass that carries them for a solid 20 feet.

Yep...then you get a soar throat for a week.

It feels like adding 75-150rwhp to your car (typical)...depending on system and setting.

I've only rode in my cousins turbo 240sx when he was spraying a 75 shot. Even with the small shot on that car you could feel it. My head was pretty much glued to the seat.

I'm looking forward to my 150 shot on the Camaro.

I love the don't be scared part. I can triple check things and still have a grimace on my face the first time I turn the key, then hopefully it turns to a smile.

All this nitrous talk, I really really should install my kit. I've had Nitrous Outlet plate goodness staring at me for over a year from the shelf.
I want NANO, remote bottle opener, and the A/F shut off switch/wideband though, and I hate tearing things apart twice, so I shall be patient.

Not necessary, but highly recommended. I don't need a A/F shutoff switch, but I'm def. going to get one before I do my install. I guess I'm over cautious.
Going to get NANO too, I want this thing to be consistent, hopefully that helps whoever ends up tuning it.

Greatest thing is when this LT1 lets go and I do a LS swap all I have to do is order a new plate.

its like feeding crack to your motor and giving it a swift kick in the ass. better than sex. if i spray in 3rd gear i take off at 60mph and when i get a little over 70mph it sprays and the back wheels break loose. if you can hook up its even better! your motor sounds like you just opened up 8 more cylinders. i recomend spraying your car. warning, it is addictive!!!

If you're not spraying a big shot, you don't really feel it much. You will feel it a little, but like everyone said, it's nothing like the movies - you don't get pinned in your seat or anything. Now, if you're spraying a 200 shot or something, it's different. Looking at your previous posts though, I don't think you will be spraying that much.

Filling up the bottle gets old though. When I was in VA it was $5/lb...so my 15lb bottle cost me $75. What sucks is now gas is so cheap so it makes n20 seem so much more expensive. :(

I'm not getting rid of my kit though. Im pulling it off my SS and putting it on my new Firehawk... I don't use it much, but since I already have it...why not? :drive:

i have it on my awd talon. the first time i sprayed it was a 50 shot on top of 26psi of boost. its pretty interesting seeing an awd car get completely sideways at a 50 mph roll. (nitrous is setup through stand alone to only spray and a certain mph) so yea its a blast using spray...literally

I've only been in my car with a 75 shot, but it just accelerates harder and pushes you into the seat more. Not violent at all since my MSD window switch is set at 3600 RPM and I'm on a small shot.

I'm sure I will be denying myself some of the experience by using a progressive controller, but hey at least my parts shouldn't suffer from the torque spike.

I'm kinda surprised you really can't feel around a 100 shot, the torque spike looks nasty on paper bringing it all in at once at 3k, figured you would feel that over running N/A, guess not from the responses here.

The effects of n2o are deff. magnified on a Forced induction setup. You will usually get more power out of a given amount of n2o in a turbo/supercharged setup vs. a N/A setup. At least that's what i have seen out on the streets.

lol iunno since leaving nitrous and going to the FI world it's completely diffferent.

the nitrous is all of a sudden, so once youve hit it, the "shock" is over with

but with the turbo your hitting it, and it's spooling, and spooling and spooling.....it just keeps getting violenter and violenter. and the sound a turbo makes makes your skin goosebump. lol it's fun spinning the tires at 80mph too

reason he didn't feel the 100 shot is because he's got an aftermarket torque converter. when you have a high stall torque converter, the torque converter softens the feel of the hit. your rpms will jump a few hundred and you'll feel the car pull harder, but it won't feel like you got hit by a truck. it feels like you're drafting off a black hole http://berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2007/03/images/hawking_key.jpg.

It is so much like sex it is ridiculous......
then you should try flipping the switch while getting road head

na in reality even on a 100 shot the car will pull a lot harder. The initial hit is the best and then up top the car just wants to keep on going. As also said you'll have at least one headache before you get the kit dialed in. As far as safety equip you either fork out the money for it now or you pay 10x as much later on when you end up buying it
