My old man has a 1967 SS350 camaro 4spd w/AC :chug:collecting dust in our barn back home. the car is 95% all original w/roughly 1 square inch of rust if you combined it all.
It's a terrible shame to see a car that rare just sit. He doesn't drive it b/c the motor has a bad vibration around 3k b/c it was never balanced properly.
he wants me to build a motor with him and i just wanted to double check my research. we wanna keep the 350 title (or stay close to it)

to get #'s matching
block- 3892657
engine suffix- MS
Heads- i need to find the casting numbers for original heads

I wanted to get a little more juice out of the motor than the stock 295HP
so this is what i had in mind. however it should appear stock. so that means Q-jet stock intake and stock heads(i believe they were double humps) and manifolds. (port&polish, valves)

9.000" deck, 3.500" 4340 crank, 6.000" h-beam rods, 4-bolt straight conversion, and whatever bore the block needs to use. i want forged flat top single valve relief with 1.25" pin height. this puts me around 357ish cu in. and 10.1/1 compression (with a 64cc chamber an 0.040" gasket)

is this a good combination? can i find pistons like that or will i have to custom order them?

how big of cam should i use for pump gas (91) target rpm's 1500-6200? (hyd. flat tappet a little lope is acceptable)

might try to sneak an alum. flywheel in there for some faster revs.

could i get 400fwhp out of such a combo?

any thoughts post em up.

As long as you use the matching #s block it is still origanal .You can change the heads, intake, carb, exhaust. The set up you choose is fine W/a comp cam 244/244/-501/501 rpm 2500-6500 and take the heads and do a 3 angle valve job w/ screw in studs & guide plates w/ roller rockers,RPM Air Gap intake.

I'd like to change all the bolt-ons but i'm pretty sure he wants the motor to appear stock b/c we have all the stock parts. (still on the current motor)

i'm just hoping with the longer rods, stroke, better flowing heads and a cam it'll overcome those bottlenecks and still be a torquey screamer. If i can talk him into some headers that would make a HUGE difference but i'm sure that'll be all he'd let me change.

Is 400fwhp attainable?

Yes, 400 hp is around what it should be.A set of jet coated headers w/ flowmaster exhaust would help alot, some March underdrive pulleys set,MSD ignition.None of that stuff will hurt the value of the car as long as you keep all the original parts and the matching #'s block is still in the car.

Nice, it still even has the bumperetts.I had a 67 rolling body my freind left here when he moved w/all new sheetmetal but i figure it would have cost too much to finish it so i sold it.Up to date i have had 26 Camaro's & restored twice as many w/ one of my freind's.So is that car going to be your soon ?

dang that's a lot of f-bodys. you wouldn't happen to have an engine block with casting #3892657 and build code MS laying around?

someday it will be. my Dad bought it in 1970 when he was a senior in HS. it got parked from 1982-2002 then i pulled it out and got it running again (fixed all the mice chewed wires). Even though the car is worth a small fortune it will never be for sale. It sure gets a lot of looks whenever we take it out. I think the paint is a rare color something like lemans blue they only used it in 67 but i'm not real sure on that.

All the work on cars is when i lived up north so i don't have any parts except for 4th gen. There is a plate on the firewall behind the mastercylinder that will tell you the history on the 67 if you go on line w/ the info on it.It will tell you color, engine, tranny, when it was made and where.

Why not just build the engine you want out of the stock block and hang onto the stuff like the quadrabog, exhaust manifolds, original heads, etc. That way, if he ever wanted to return it to original numbers matching everything, he could. Also, you could just rebuild the engine with better internals, have the quadrabog freshened up and install one of the hidden nitrous systems that go in the air cleaner.

well that's the deal he wants it #'s matching now. i was just gonna free up the parts that we're on it so it would look genuinely original but still be fun to drive. we have everything but the block and heads. i've convinced him that headers are a must and that was the only thing he was willing to give up. it's never gonna be raced on a track. it's mainly gonna be built for cruising and an occasional WOT to thrill the kiddies.

could we get a stock exhaust set-up from year one?

i thought it'd be cool to work the underside of the intake and mount fuel rails and injectors up from the inside of the motor and just hide the wires in an old vacuum hose or such. gut the q-jet and mount an internal TPS and run it off speed density. that would be my ideal setup. sorry no nitrous

doesn't look too bad for 176000 original miles
