The motor in my 68 camaro just spun a bearing. Right not its got 11:1 compression and a 588 lift cam, single plain intake and 750 holley. Wasnt the best on gas or even all that fast for that matter. I want to rebuild it to be more streetable. What cam would be good? I still want a nice sounding idle. It has closed chamber heads on it. I would be switching to a dual plain intake. And if i could get away with a 650 carb maybe??? The main duties for this car are street driving and occasional road race and auto cross. If i can make the car go high 12's low 13's and get anything over 10 miles to the gallon id be happy. It also has a six speed tranny. Oh yeah b the way its a 396.

thanks
Jesse

I would try to lower the compression w/a thicker head gasket.Edelbrock AirGap intake,Edelbrock 750 Carb,CompCam230/230/-520/520.The Edelbrock Carb is more for the street.W/the car properlly tuned it should get alot better gas milage than it did.

What heads do you have what is the casting numbers under the valve coveres,What is the duration @50 and lsa. What did the car run in the 1/4 like it was? big blocks are never going to get good gas mileage but you can probably do a little better.

definitely drop the comp. down and then you may be able to run a smaller cam. are you now running a double pumper or vac. secondaries 750? you really should be close to 10 mpg's the way it was with a six speed, unless the tune was way out of whack or something. also i would stay away from the edlebrock carb., holley's have always performed better and got just as good fuel economy if tuned right.
