alright, im in the process of retro fitting my 355 into my 1993 nissan 240sx.. i know.. i know.. im stupid.. anyway im doing it,
my situation is,
i dont have alot of room for the oil pan, i'm going to be modifying a racing pan to fit, but, could i use a 2 qt oil filter and then a lower capacity oil pan?
i know i need at least 5qt total for the motor, so i started thinking..
usually its 4qt in the pan plus 1qt in the filter,
i know there are 2qt filters, so could i use
3 qts in the pan and 2qts in the filter?
that would make fitting things in there so much easier.
if it matters, its going to be pushing about 350hp/350torque naturally aspirated around 9.5-10.0 compression.
please let me know what you guys think.
how much oil do i need?
can i use the 2qt filter and a smaller pan?
or do i need to use a 1 qt filter and at least a 4 qt pan
thanks,
chris

Well, the simple plan for you, IF you can alter the pan and have the pickup work fine, you are in good shape for 1. Best of all, you can still run a extra quart (4 total) and it wont hurt a thing. So you can still use a 1 quart filter and 4 in the pan. When i build higher RPM motors and want to use a stock pan, i just add a total of 6 quarts with the stock pan, works very well with no issues.
How does that sound?
BTW, there is nothing dumb about the swap you are doing, i think it is a good choice for a project/toy. How about some pics some time?

so you're saying i could make the sump hold only about 3 qts, but put an extra qt in there, totalling 4qts, and then have one in the filter?
this is only going to be a 6500 rpm redline or so motor. i may go for a 6 qt total if i have room, i just wanted to know how small i can go with this pan, if needed.
thanks for your help,
usually i take heat from the nissan guys who say "woah ur ruining the 240's super drifto handling!" " its not JDM yo"
and then the chevy guys are usually more understanding and realize that a 350 horse engine... in a 2700lb car... ends up with a quick car.
so thanks alot for the help, and ill get pics for ya soon, i have them on my comp at home.

You need to use a Moroso Oil Accumulator it hold the extra oil your pan can't and supplies it to the motor when your oil pressure drops by compressed air.Too much oil in the pan and you will loose HP this will help you gain HP.

Exactly, 1 quart is ok over, but it creates excessive windage with 2 over, so as stated above, that si your best option.

ill think about the accumulator, but i think im going to just end up making a pan that holds about 4qt in the sump and maybe add an extra 1/2 qt for saftey, ill just use a 1 qt filter

so this is the accumulator
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=mor-23930
would this allow me to run a 1.5 less qt capacity pan?
say about a 3qt pan, plus 1.5 in the accumulator making 4.5 plus 1 in the filter should be enough but are there any problems with this set up?
im just wondering.. since the accumulator is made for "emergency losses of oil" such as sharp turns and hard acceleration, would it work properly if it was used constantly?

They do have a bigger one also that holds 3qt's #MOR-23900.Summit has a tech line that could let you how to answer the last question but if it works when your oil pressure gets low i don't see why it would'nt work in sharp turns and hard acceleration.
