Being i am a total newbie to GM stuff, my machine shop has a set of aluminum heads from a ZZ3 engine. Are these the same as the ZZ4 heads? Just trying to figure out exactly what im getting into--with the specs and all--like chamber size. They are fresh rebuilds on the shelf with valves, he wants $600 for the pair. Seems like a cheap way to get into aluminum heads for my 383 build which will have most emphisis on torque in the 2000-5500 rpm range.

these are very nice heads Lingenfelter gets some real nice power from them using 2.00 1.56 valves,CNC porting etc. however the price is a lil high considering you should use a much better spring than what comes on them! Trick flow 23* heads are only 400.00 more and come with bigger valves(2.02 1.60)just something to consider!

These heads he has are heads with fresh ground seats and valves,no springs. I am definatly on a budget, and maybe even with another $200 in parts to complete them, im still saving $2-300. Thats alot of $$ to buy other things. But i do here what your saying about the cost. Im going to see if i can talk him down on them being he is doing all my machine work too.
And to answer my own question, yes, it appears the zz3 and zz4 use the same heads--58cc---man im going to need a heck of a dish to get the compression down some with the 383.

yeah atleast 50.00-75.00 off,he will make the cash back in labor as a return customer.
speedproL 2256 piston should be roughly 10.5 comp w/58cc head which is great unless you are thinkin about a procharger or turbo.:D which then the L2441 (i think thats the part#)would be 8.5-9comp....booooost baby!

I wouldnt use them, there are so many other heads out there that can make so much more power for a lil more cash. If you could settle with iron heads then I would go with some rhs heads, i picked up 49whp going from stock zz4 heads to out of the box rhs iron heads.

sounds like a great deal, i mean 600 bucks for some aluminum heads is a good deal, or you could just fork out the extra dough and run with rhs or some darts.

Well i bought them---man are these things light. I got all the original hardware (springs, valves, rockers), and a new set of manley valves with them along with studs and guide plates. They were feshened up on the seats and had a light cleanup pass on them--i will CC them before it goes together. So i think i did fairly well. Being my first chevy build coming from the mopar camp, you can barely buy one head at that price with all the hardware and good valves. As long as im happy i guess thats whats important.
Now, i just need to find an engine to put them on. Im a engine (for the block and misc reusable hardware), a set of rods and pistons away from starting my build.
