This is my dads 1987 Monte Carlo SS Drag Car... it has a 454 bored and stroked to a 496 with a medium sized roller cam, hooker super comp headers, AFR aluminum heads, performer rpm intake, and 950 cfm holley double pumper, power glide, and 9 inch ford rear ... he was the 2007 pro class points champion at Action City Dragway, Terre Haute, IN and his best time is a 6.18 @ 110 mph with a 1.36 60'.. This year he was second in points for the final race and ran 2 6.40's in a row with a .02 light and .008 light  for his time trials and when up to do a third T/T and heard a weird noise so he took it off the track and took it back to the pits... after taking off the valve cover he found the moroso valve spring in 4 pieces! :barf: So there went his chances at winning a second championship... when we got home we took off the head and found a whole in the piston with the head of the valve broken off and in the intake manifold!! the head got banged up pretty good and has to be sent off to be welded... guess it wasnt his day was it!!!

Carnage!
Why not a single plane intake if you dont mind my asking?
86MCSS
11-26-2008, 10:41 PM
you kno i am not for sure he got this intake id say 4 to 5 years ago and stuck with it ever since and he has his mild cam for torque he claims that it gives him more torque and with those launches its hard to argue and you probably wont believe this but this is with like 18 degrees of timing and his car likes 42 but nhra rules state that you have to be certified to run 6.39 or under and have a lot more protective clothing and he didnt want to do all that and a lot of ppl at our track ran under but he started doing good so people decided they were going to complain so he backed the timing way off until he would run 6.4 now he is getting in certified!

Yep 9.98 and quicker you need to have the cage cert'D, not to mention you need a Comp license to run your car.
I'd say it might pickup some power and a little grunt with a Victor or Super Victor, but it sounds like that packages works pretty well as it is so why spend money if it does what he wants it to I say....
Good looking car, I think I may have seen it on Yellowbullet.com?

11-26-2008, 10:56 PM
yeah im glad he is doing all of that this winter he said he might borrow some juice and throw down a 5 second pass! but yeah it would be cool to have a better intake and thanks i wish mine looked half that good! but i didnt even know about yellowbullet and i got on there and sure enough you were right he was running the 6.50 OSM class!!!

You know I might somewhere, I have hours of street racing vids form the mid 90's when he used to hustle the shit out of people, it even had a 406 w/ a Carb Shop Q-jet on it then and a very stealthy nitrous system. I think it went bottom 11's on the street...

11-26-2008, 11:36 PM
haha thats so funny hustlin people on the street but i would love to see what it looked like and runnin bottom 11s on the street is movin!

Is he still running stainless steel valves or titanium?
BBC intake valves are heavy.

why bother with the extra cost and weight of a BBC to run 7.5's? I have a full weight 79 malibu classic and with a 406 SBC that runs 7.2's. both are G bodies so the weight should be similar.

12-30-2008, 02:19 AM
thanks guys hes gettin it back together soon hopefully the heads are in nevada getting welded and the block in getting sleeved right now... but he found some bad news... the crank and a pretty decent size crack!! more money thats all right lol but i would go with a bbc because of torque and bragging rights... and just the sound of a bbc idling at like 550 rpms is the best... my opinion that is

im pretty sure theyre stainless i dnt think they are titanium i could be wrong but no matter wut it is they were still gonna break when the spring broke lmao
