Advanced Engineering Tech - Straight-through muffler width vs. length: Which one makes it quieter?

Okay, so let's say you have a straight-through muffler like a Magnaflow, Borla, perforated glass pack, etc. Will you get more sound control by one that was wider or longer?

Let's say you have these two mufflers:

14" long and 6" wide
18" long and 4" wide

Which one would be quieter?

I had to make the same choice a few minutes ago, and ended up going with the Magnaflows. After having looked at both, it seems that the Magnaflow that has the the wider case and therefore more room for the glass packing will be quieter.
Although my choices where something like
16" long and 4.25" wide
14" long and 5" wide

The second one will be quieter.

length is quieter than width be a large margin

wouldnt you look at overall case volume?
seems to me the 18x4 would have more case volume to eat up the noise.

You are looking at material packed around the center flow tubes. Narrow long cases will always have more packed around then a large case would. Ive always seen longer narrow mufflers quieter then short and wide ones...

A 6x14 muffler has much more case volume than a 4x18.

I am buying the "longer muffler" argument Take each to the extreme:

Let's say you have a muffler that is 20" in diameter and 4" long vs. a muffler that is 3" in diameter and 30" long. Assume a 2" diameter tailpipe. It seems to me like the 30" long muffler would put the exhaust in contact with not just more packing material, but more effectively utilized packing material. On the 4" long muffler, the exhaust would only briefly come into contact with the packing material, and the material that's more than a few inches from the tailpipe would experience rapidly deminishing returns.
