Small Block & Big Block Chevy Specific - Question about putting a tbi 305 into a 97 S10

Might be buying a buddy's s10 on the cheap. Truck most likely has blown head gasket. It is a 97 s10 4.3 v6 2wd with the manual (5 spd) transmission.

I will most likely have a number of other questions later on, but I would like to start with this one.

IS there anyway to use the stock five speed in the s10 with a 305 tbi motor out of a 95 silverado?

I have performed several engine pulls but never a swap of this magnitude. I would greatly appreciate tips on doing this, or links. Thanks guys I'll post pix if and when I take on this project!

Yes, im pretty sure the trans will bolt right up.

You will need a flexplate and clutch assembly for the 305 though. As well as a wiring harness and ECM for the V8...im not sure if the v6 ECM will run a V8.

You will need standard V8 motor mounts and headers if you want to use them...im not 100% sure if the stock exhaust manifolds will work in the swap or not.

Being that the truck is already a V6, the fuel pump shouldnt need changing and the front accesories should bolt right up.

Your not going to gain much power wise by putting in this 305 over the 4.3 thats in there now, just to let you know.

^ awesome I really appreciate it. I know i won't gain much, I don't want to bother with the 4.3 repair, and a friend said he'd give me either his 305 or his 1988 350 both tbi.

I really want to keep this thing on a strict budget, my friend is selling me the s10 for fifty bucks, it's mint other than the blown head gasket. And my other friend will sell me either engine for 100. the 305 is high mileage, and the 350 is older and was recently rebuilt.

Would the stock s10 tranny bolt up to the 350 with a new bellhousing? again the 350 is out of a 1988 silverado 2wd. What are my other options in taking on this project. Not trying to build a hot rod just a reliable v8 mini truck. Thanks guys

The flywheel etc from the 4.3 will work on the 305. check the pin out of the pcms you may be able to use a v8 truck of same year as the s10 and run the tbi. get an 85 vette radiator they fit perfect in the s10. I have owned 2 v8 s10's so far

Alot of people have told me that I will need to change my front springs and sway bar. Is this a requirement?

I dont think the 305/350 will weight much more than the 4.3 to factor in changing the springs.

Yes the V8's will bolt up to the tranny with an aftermarket bellhousing.

BUT, if you do this, see if the V8 will hook to the stock bellhousing first b/c it might.
