Me and 2 buds are heading that way from Mid-Missouri. We went to Indy last year. That was a waste for us, except to drive around the Brickyard track. Should see you there. :chug:

Always wanted to go to a large POCI or GTOAA event. And the darn thing is I am on vacation that week but will be trapshooting in Indianapolis at the Indiana State shoot.Whats even more ironic is late July into the first week of August my company is sending me to Dayton Ohio for work related stuff and I just miss the T/A Nationals!Bad timing!

Welcome to Dayton Ohio.

In years past you guys have rented Kil Kare for drag racing. I don't know if you're doing it again. At any rate Kil Kare has a test and tune Thursdays. 15.00 to race 5.00 to watch. Getes open 4:30 or so. Normally car counts are 225 to 300 cars. Normally there are some silly fast - driven to the track street cars. If you're in town Thursday come get some.

:drive: you're welcome

Rick Speed

Yeah there was a guy that used to rent the track for the TA Nats time period but wasn't actually connected to the event. He stopped doing it 2 years ago though and I won the last year he had it.

That might have been a guy in nice Blue T/A. Perhaps a 10.3 et. car, I don't remember. If it's him, we once drove to local tracks and raced. Then he made his car faster and pulled with an Avalanche.

Damn, what was his name? Nice guy had something to do with the Dayton T/A club. Oh well, you're all welcome to come racing Thursday. I know he worked at GM perhaps lost his job!!

For directions - it's www. kil kare.com

You have been in a bunch of classes as I remember. Subjective judging is always a problem. The car I thought should have won my class last year did not even get a place.

I'll be there with my medium blue metallic trans am with silver checkered racing stripes. For you guys wanting to win a trophy, let me give you a little piece of advice. The judging and classing is the worst I've ever seen. This was evident last year when 97RAMSST's absolutely gorgeous SOM didn't even place in the our class. I have been going to this show since 1997 and wouldn't miss it, but quickly learned that the years I did win a trophy that I didn't get to enjoy the show because I was cleaning my car all weekend. Then the one year I won a trophy and didn't do anything but wash it and clean the interior. So you can decide to either spend all your time cleaning your car to only be disappointed because of the poor judging, or make it presentable and enjoy the cars and the people.

Ya it always interesting for me to be judged at any show really, always wondering what that judge is looking for and what they like and dont like, but that is part of it.

For example I would be the worst person to judge the classes with a ton of chrome and polished everything, just not my style dont really like the look at all to be honest, but I can respect the work and money that has gone into it. Also when you get in those classes it is much harder to win since you have such a wide range of mods that someone may have done to their car and it comes down to what the judges like and don't like.

This sort of thing happened two years ago in my class. There was a really clean blackbird in my class that didn't place in the top 3. I couldn't see anything wrong with the car so I thought it was a lock to win it all since it was a rare car and it was clean. But again maybe the judges seen something they didn't like...for me in the case of that car he had the entire interior lubed with armorall...I hate that look and if I was the judge it wouldn't been good for him either. Not to say that is wrong or right just if you like the super shiney look and your cars interior to feel like baby oil was rubbed all over it then go for it thats your right. I personally was thinking my interior is really clean and has a nice satin shine to it and I was wondering if I would get dinged for not having the thing lubed up with that junk. Its personal taste it isn't worth it for me to win if I have to do that and I guess maybe I ran into some judges that think like me that year.

I feel bad for someone like 97RAMSST's who has a really nice car but again is in that class where anything goes and that is a difficult one to win. Now not placing at all that is just wrong in his case, he should place somewhere in the top 3.

No still got it, hard time to sell a car like this one that is why I am open to trades a little more.
I agree Tipp City is the only reason I can make it through the weekend. I have won every year and I can say that the judging is off in alot of classes. My dad's SOM Firehawk have been there 3 years and never looked any different but got a third place last. He all ways looses to a red Firehawk with yellow crap all over it.

If you go to the judging meeting they tell you not to grease up your tires and interior. It will detract from the overall look of the car.

02SOMLS1WS6
08-26-2009, 08:13 PM
I couldn't agree more on greasing everything up!

Usually I am cleaning my car not stop on the judging day and usually dont attend Saturday. Since I have no chance at winning anything in the winners circle and possibility of rain I will most likely be taking a laid back approach this year and hope to meet and talk with some of you guys at the show. I hope to make the cruise in as well this year since everyone says it is the best part of the weekend.

Wade, your dad's car is a beautiful car. Its a shame he's getting rid of it.

I took several pictures of your car. Its looks really good. Seems you added some new things from last year? There was a lot of cars this year and it seems to be very nice at the new hotel. I have Nitrous on my car now and would have to remove it because they would put me in the Super Street class "N" with it. That class would be very hard to place in. I'll post some pics of some I took later.

I agree. I purposly found a car wash that had the raincheck thing because i figured it would rain friday evening and sure enough it did. i'm glad i didn't have to keep frantically drying my car off like some people did. i simply drove it back to the car wash saturday morning and had it washed again, lol.

I was totally shocked when they called my car number for second place in modifed. The car that won first was really nice and low miles and i was sure he was going to take first, but between the other 4 or 5 ars in the class i figured it was a tossup for second, i was really suprised. they didn't do a 3rd because there were only 5 or 6.

I have almost 400 photos that i will upload when i get home this afternoon. I hope everyone had a great time :) I agree about the new location. i like the fact you don't have to walk nearly as far to see all the cars and that no one got stuck parking on the grass. I wasn't on the grass last year but i did see quite a few classes that were

A lot of classes have judging quirks---make some adjustments and try another class.

No changes could be made for the one class that I saw had a "quirk". I am not one to bash the judging because it is subjective but it seems like if you are in the class that has above 10 changes the judges are looking for the most outlandish car instead of a car that has the same number of changes and is tastefully done. If the changes you have made to the car instantly reduces the value of the vehicle by 90% then that should be way behind the car that has the same number of changes even if they are suttle and the cars looks sweet and is something the majority of us would like to own. I am not calling out any classes or winners but I think we all know what class we are speaking of. All I can say is I am glad I am not in those classes with a lot of changes.

Again just some constructive critisim, my 2 cents, my thoughts. Anyone that would change their car to fit into a class is kind of lame, I think most of us like to drive our cars and can really care less what class we are in, just want some common sense judging....say to yourself would I like to own this car because these changes were made and it made the car look better.

Ahh screw it...it really doesn't matter in the end it is just a piece of hardware thrown in the corner of the garage taking up space. What ever someone wants to do their car that is great and if they win so be it.

I had a good time, I liked the new location. It was great meeting some of you guys and overall the weekend and weather was great. It was a first for me at Tipp City I will for sure do that again. My winners circle award is really nice and the show was run great by the organizers.

Thanks. Although in Tipp City nearly everyone who looked close at it came up and asked me two questions. "Is this a factory color?" and "Are those factory rims?". Eventually I went and got a Sharpie and wrote on my namecard with my make and model "Yes, this is a factory color with factory rims." QuickSilver your car looks great and isn't over top at all. I believe yours is more of a driver than mine so I dont know how you keep it looking so nice. My car sees between 2000 and 3500 miles a year depending on if I have done a power tour or some other long cruise with friends. You deserve the trophy you got, but I dont envy you or those in your class that is a tough one to win and everyone has their opinion on what looks good. Those classes where anything and everything goes is crazy, I respect the time and money you all have in your cars. I am with you though if I was a car show only guy I would have to find a way to get out of that one. I am lucky because the changes I have made is what I wanted to do and keeps me in a sane car show class so I am lucky. Now when I get the blower on it then I will be with the power adder guys. I wish non-car show type stuff didn't kick you out of the class unless it was made very car show like (chrome and such), I like my class and hanging out with the few guys I talk to each year.

i guess i was suprised because i don't really have a low mileage car (it had 126,010 at judging time) but then again i do know it is in very good shape for its age/mileage. Southern cars FTW. I was showing some of the stuff i have in the glove box to someone next to me at tipp city. i should frame or laminate the invoice i found in the car a few months ago showing its very first oil change. 3194 miles march 24, 1995 and it cost them $37.xx  I guess dealerships charge more in hawaii.

I would love to see the score sheets for the cars in that class. It would be interesting to see what the judges were looking for.

You would probably be suprised how close the scores would be. There were probably only a few points between 1st and say 6th. My first year in that class I scored 197/200 and I got fourth--which means 1st had 200. Some of the other guys who have posted complained about the judging--but take a look at the scoring sheets-- there are 3 sections of 25 pts. where 10 of those pts. are cleanliness and presentation---thats 30 pts before you get to the Overall.
If you didn't clean your wheel backs ,have dirty fenderwells, etc., you just screwed yourself no matter how cool your car looks on the outside( nice wheels and a nice paint job). Slaping on too much tire shine will loose you points also. That red car that won could have been 4th-or 5th in the overall section but thats only a possible 25. I learned early on ---ITS A SHOW -PAY ATTENTION TO DETAIL--then maybe some guys won't be pissing and moaning about the judging.

I have been to 10 Nats and each year is different.

the rest (approx 380 once they are all uploaded) can be seen here

Im pretty sure alot of people would agree that this years show had something just alittle off in the m-3 judging. Ive been to 4 years of ta nationals 2 years in my 95 ta and 2 years in my 02 ta and know what the judges look for and have worked my ass off trying to catch another win. This year was the worst, Ive never seen two more poor of examples of a Winning SHOW CAR! Personally any person who would take a spray paint can to a car and just start spraying everything you can get your hands on isnt adding custom touches he or she is only taking away from the valve of that vehicle.. Dont even get me started on the decals some of this cars have, god we all know its a trans am and is ram air it says it on the doors and the hood from the factory we dont need 50 thousand decals all over a vehicle to remind us!! Decals dont make it a Show WINNER WOW!! ALot of people in the m-3 class put tons of time into there vehicles and pay very close attention to detail as to pull wheels, polish everything possiable, re-paint , clean and clean ect. ect until their hands fall off to come and get beat by vehicles far FAR from show quality!! Im not saying my car should have won anything but Honestlly what was the judges basing those choices on. And as for the wheel wells on that SHOW WINNING Gold thing I guess the judges missed all the dirt and bullshit building up in his front wheel wells!! Sell me on that win please :nono:

As for the :givesfuck coming from "Bird man" alot of people do give a fuck and they, the same as you have the right to share there opinion ;)

Myself really I dont care that I didn't place or win... I won much more than any stupid award from ta nationals... Rob with the 2000 pewter Ta in the M3 class and I were asked ( " because OUR cars ARE SHOW/MAGAZINE quality" ) to do a photoshot by High Performance Pontiac Magazine. Rob and I will be featured soon together in a wicked spot in Dayton with tons of great pictures and info on our cars.

LOL...you know what the sad thing is? That everyone will just say "well thats the Nats for you." Well thats BS for a show of that size and stature. When they are SOOOOO many obvious discrepancies and judging errors it CLEARLY calls into question the legitimacy and integrity of the show and staff. This is the VERY reason I didnt go this year and may never go again. I think my screwing last year is fairly legendary by now, but at the same time I would never put anybody else's car that was in my class or any other down. The car owners didn't do the judging and they are just as proud of their car as you are of yours...no matter how legitimate the argument that just makes you seem like a sore loser.

I wonder if the judges in that class this year were the same as last??? If so maybe they think judging is like golf and the lower the number the better????

My point was you can't bang your head up against the wall with shit you can't control. Robbie got screwed last year and we all now it-but I have no clue what those judges look at---I get my score sheets and wonder about numbers also. I go to hang out with my friends from Pa. & Mass.---they just tech me into that class so thats where I park. I thought there were some ligit cars in M-3---But I don't judge and a lot of times I don't agree either.
I am looking forward to your shots in the mag.

I wish they would just drop the judging and trophies all together. I've been there many years and only once on Sunday. I love to come and talk to other Firebird and TA owners and see their cars. Its great to have a large gathering where we can see many cars in one place like ours. I enjoy Saturday the best. I have a garage full of trophies and care less if I win any up there. I see many cars making it to the winners circles and wonder how they made it there. People complain every year about this and it would be nice just to have a large event and do some fun things instead of cleaning all weekend. A lot of the cars won't even go on the lot before Sunday. Most cars might not show if no judging was taking place but I think the atmosphere would improve? I'm all for dropping the trophies or giving everybody one, LOL.:burn:

I still think the best part of the weekend is the drive to Tipp City.

I see someone got a picture of Zek and the new widened Ruffs (19x11 305/30/19s)Looks like it was taken after I had to leave as I picked up a nail, at the showfield, to get my near flat fixed.

Dan, I found out why I didnt get a 2nd place in our class with my mint 2 week old restoration.

They only award one trophy per 5 cars, so small classes with nice cars get "screwed".

BTW, here's my car next to Dan's:

Hey guys, I had gone to several of the Nats back in the day 2000-2003 and never placed and got very frustrated so I took some time off. This year I decided to go up and just have a great time hanging out with hundreds of other Firebird fans. Winning was just a bonus and was not expected due to the variations I have seen in the past and even this year.
Guys, just remember it is two guys opinion for most of the points so it really boils down to if they like the way the car is done. If you put alot of emotion in how the cards fall at the Nationals you are not doing it for what it truely is and that being a great gathering of TAs and Birds. in the end we all take home an award in that we had fun and have our birds.
Thoughts?

That has always been my take on going there. Some years you luck out and some years you don't. Some times you agree with the judges and sometimes you don't. That's life. I go to have fun and hang out.

Chris--I can see your point---but the talk here is about the Heavy Custom class being so radical---I won my 1st in a lower class the first year I had the car. In that class, I think clean was the overpowering force--and my car was super clean at that time. Being in Heavy Custom sucks if you only go to get an award. So now that I am stuck in that class I deal with it. I could take a buch of stuff off of my car and go to a lower class to try to win but I don't care about the awards --if I get one great . I like going and hanging out--We missed you and your dad this year when we were having pizza & drinks on saturday night.

When I did go, I didn't expect to win, but I tried to win. I liked the idea of whose car is the cleanest is the winner. It seems like the problem that everyone has is "taste". Whomever is judging has a bit to say in way of points of "taste". It seems some years it is red cars, other years it is cars with over the top accessories. Maybe they should just do away the presentation aspect.

Personally, I think that whatever is done to the car should be the the best interest of the design and flow of the car. In other words, it should look like the factory did it.

I think they should do a participant type judging like they do at the BanOne show in ATL. (Heavy Modded 4thGens judge Custom 4th Gens and so on.) Like John says...who knows these cars better than fellow Bird owners? I have never heard a single complaint about the judging at that show. Of course thats a ten times better show all around than the Nats is IMO...with the exception of the number of cars, but its growing!

I see your score sheet and think you have a perfect car. Do they really check your carpets and such or glance at them. Can't see why you would get a mark down from five points? A few points here and there mean a lot when everything is added up.

Just got my score sheets & the theory of red always getting high scores is blown out the window!
Those guys hammered me but good, or in my case, bad!

How does one get a score of 4 with 2 week old perfect paint, then get a 1 for presentation?
My TA floor mats were mint, never used or stepped on, (just bought them from a list member here still in the lloyds box!) & I had just cleaned & vacuumed the car before I hit the show field, yet I only get a 2 for cleanliness?

On of my rims had about 2" of rash, not allot, you really had to look to find it, & the tires were mint, the rims were clean, shiny & dirt free (had them cleaned & stick on weights balanced the day before I drove to the nats, & check out how bad I was graded!

I could have went with steelies & done better!

And how does one get a 4 on paint, yet a 2 on cleanliness?

I cleaned & polished like a mutha' right up until 11 & made sure it looked as good as possible.

And my engine, not allot of bling, but with new paint in the engine compartment, it was mint & not dirty, yet I also got hammered there!
Don't get me wrong, I didn't expect to walk away with hardware, but with all new paint & resto job everywhere, I didn't expect to get thrashed upon either!

They obviously didn't give 2 shits this year, esp judge JH, the one using red ink.
He hit me real hard on everything

Check out the overall appearance, 12????
How's that happen?

I guess I'll never ask for my sheets again as looking at them kinda makes me pissed.

Oh, here's my sheets:
