I was told by the previous owner that the cable on the driver side is bad. When I press the button, I don't hear anything. I have to put it up/down by hand.
Where is a good place to get this checked out, or is there an easy way to tell if I need a new motor for it?

I don't think there is an easy way, sounds like your gonna have to test the electric from the switch back then once you determine the motor is getting power go from there, if it is truly a cable, it would seem one side would make some movement or you would hear some noise, the cables go on inside the top somewhere I only know this cause I had my top swapped out last summer and the new top came with new stainless cables and the shop didn't use them. Their is no common problem with the top or the motors on these cars sorry to say. Some have pumps go out, mines original and works fine and mines a 99, YMMV.
Good luck and welcome.

Thanks for the input...I think I found a shop that can check it all out.

I've seen quite a few reports of the top switch going out, resulting in the "no noise when I press the button" symptom. The pump is located under the carpet in the trunk above where the CD changer mounts and behind the driver's rear wheel well. If you pull the electrical connector off the pump motor and check it for voltage while someone presses the switch (key in ON position), you can determine if it is the switch or not. The voltage should reverse polarity when you press UP or DOWN on the switch. If you don't get voltage in both modes, your switch is bad, or possibly the fuse has blown.
If you get voltage and the pump motor doesn't run when connected, then the pump motor is probably bad. If the motor runs and you don't get any motion on the top, then you might be low on fluid.

The PO said that it was a broken cable, is this a possibility as well? I hope it is a bad switch and not the motor. Also, the top of the convertible window is not connected which is annoying. Maybe a shop can take care of this or glue of some sort will work. I will check the fuses, I have to search for it online because I do not have an owners manual.

^ Convertible top fuse is #15 (windows) on the panel on the side of the dash when you open the driver's door.
Owner's manuals are available online as a PDF download. Don't remember where, but it was free.

Here are a couple threads about the rear window. I just replaced the whole top when mine did it, but my top was tired, starting to fall apart and I didn't care for the tan color.... Good Luck.

i may have some input if your window is coming unglued be careful what u glue it back with if you glue it back with a epoxy that doesnt flex then it will stay glued there and find a weaker point in your top to pull apart like the inside seams
