Tools & Fabrication - Looking to start up a dyno business. Need help!

Hi there, I was just wondering if anyone has experience in this area. Ie: cost of a good dyno (used?) and what I should be looking at as far as leased space. Pour concrete floor etc? ANY info here would be very much appreciated as this is something I've been thinking of for a long time. I want to start off just doing weekend pulls (I hope they're easy enough to learn how to run) and eventually hire someone to help out and do some dyno tunes. Want to expand someday into a full out performance shop but one thing at a time. Dyno and bay/garage help needed.

Thanks a ton guys.

How much hp handling should I be looking at? What are some rough costs for a new dyno setup? I can used a poured garage floor and place the dynometer ON TOP of the floor right? Doesn't have to be in ground? Thanks.

I am pretty sure you need to have a dyno pit.
That is about all I know as far as the subject goes.
Doing a dyno pull is easy, tuning on the other hand is where things get tricky.
Get a dynojet, not a mustang.

I have seen above ground dynos you drive onto a life and then back onto the rollers.

these questions would be better answered via a company that sells dyno's. call the manufacturer and ask

If you plan on tuning DO NOT get a dynojet. I have one and i like it for horsepower and torque only!
If you want to log other things i.e AFR, boost, TPS, ECT, EGT..... get something like a DynoDynamics or Land Sea dyno.

I have the Dynojet 224xLC in a pit.

Also if you are going to rent space make sure the noise will not make anyone mad. My shop was built 8 months ago and the first week my neighbors hated me!

I have helped out a little on a dyno the strapping down cars all day will burn you out. Just buy a real dyno try to get a in ground dyno. From my expierience the cheap ones are way off . I had one read my stock lt1 car at 400 rwhp. I believe hot rod magazine did a story on how off some dynos are. And yes location is key make sure there is not a people living close or you could have lots of complaints. Not just from the noise but from people when leaving they tend to light the tires it never fails.

My shop teachers has pictures from when they installed the one in the highschool from a few years back if you are interested.

I am indeed interested and wanted to stick with an above ground capable of up to 1200hp. The land/sea I have looked into and some reasonable prices there for sure.

you can get out of ground dyno jets... and i want to say they are over 50k... i want to say you can get a mustang for like 30k....

probably cheaper used

The 224x(LC) can be out of ground and you can get a 4-post lift also, and its no wheres near 50k.

Wow! thanks for all of that! BUt whos myspace is private? That looks like a lot of work, that's why I want to go above ground if possible. The pricing I got was nowhere near 50k either. Thanks again so much man. :)

I got it from my shop teachers myspace.

I don't think the labor would be that much if you called up some buddies and promised them free food and dyno sessions. I would personally go for it, you will save alot of time since you don't have to lift the cars up on the dyno etc, though I can't imagine a dyno shop being packed with cars..

Well aren't there one's available where you just drive up the ramp onto them? A dyno shop around here would be a hit since the closest one is like three and a half hours away. Enough ricers around here with fart cans and muscle car enthusiasts (retirees too with vettes etc) to keep me busy for at least a couple days a week. I eventually want to get into a full out performance shop with a parts desk etc. I want to work something out with my exhaust guy and locate next door to him (then people could get their fart cans put on by him, he could then refer them to my dyno shop and vice versa). Just toying with the idea still. Thanks again man. :)

yeah after further research i was fairly accurate... dynapacks are 60k ( pricey ) and dynojets and others are 20-30k

I just spoke to someone about a dyno package with the roll up ramps for about $15,000. It just mounts to the floor of your concrete bay area. I supply the pc and such. Not a bad deal! Now to see if I can get it to Canada without doubling the price.

Hey if you buy a dyno get ready for a flood!!! My friend Chris and I had people walking in before we had even bought the dyno...Chris had to quit his day job because we got so busy...I have a day job that pays too much to quit.....If you want to talk some more just e-mail me, or not...good luck with this.....Tim

There is a DEFINITE demand for one here, that's why I'm considering it. I'll start off on weekends only and then step it up once business picks up. I want to go full out and eventually have some skilled staff to do tuning and to be able to distribute parts. Gonna strike a deal with one of our local custom exhaust shops here. Referrals man! :D

We priced dynojets before. Under 20 for a nice in ground 2wd setup. Close to 50 for an above ground AWD/2000hp capable setup with a 4 post lift.

If you're gonna go the cheaper way and do the in ground, make sure the place you're leasing will allow it. Most wont.

What applications would I benefit in having this be? Just curious because I have come across this in my research. Thanks.

I would advise some classes pertaining to business. It would suck to owe a bunch of money for a business that wasnt making you any money.

dynapak.

above ground, mobile (ish) there heavy.

but one of the best out there for tuning, just jack up the car and mount to the hubs, no fussing around with straps and driving the car on / off etc....

set it up in any shop, parking lot, etc....

You are never going to pay for the dyno doing just hp pulls. You will need to do tuning to pay off your investment.

The concrete work shown is likely 8-10K around here, that is some quality work.

Here there are 12 dyno's or more in a 30 mile drive, dyno time is cheap, and plentiful.
