Pontiac G8 2008-2009 - boosting the g8

a pair of precision 6062's :D goal for now is to get it done before drag week, turn it up to the limit of the stock fuck system. then later work on the fuel system and turn it up a little more. the intercooler is done, charge pipe to the engine is done. turbos are mounted where i want them under the car. now i just have to tie it all together.

Are you running a BAP on your current fuel system? There are people now that are running less power than what you're going to be at and already having some starvation issues.

the g8 is stout, engine, tranny and rear will hold a lot of power.

no bap. since everything else is stock and i will be running low boost i think i will be ok for now. i do have a bap laying here i could hook up but dont the injectors run out at the same time as the fuel pump?

I could be wrong but from what I have seen the stock injectors are good for about 420-440rwhp in a boosted application, the stock pump is good to 550 or so to the wheels.

I would suggest that you do run a return scavenger pump with as low as those turbos are mounted. The oil would literally have to drain uphill to even go back into the pan itself. That doesn't make for good drainage out of the CHRA.

yea i may eventually move mine to that location, the APS kit takes the oil from the factory sender location, and then uses the scavenge pump to dump it in the oil fill spot. My oil pressure drops to 18-20 at idle when the car is warmed up and I only see about 40 at start up & wot.

did you have any problems with the pasenger side air filter pipe fitting. the instructions show it running in the same spot as the drivers side. right between the motor mount and oil pan. it wont fit there due to the tranny lines.
i think i can get it to run up behind the motor mount but was curious what you did on your car.

i am not getting this done quick enough. drag week will be here in no time.
all i got done since last week are the "down pipes". then i started looking at tieing in the wg's and they look real tight. if i could put them in backwards it would be easy on both sides but to put them int he right direction is tight.
car will be running stock 2.25" exhaust, stock cam, stock injectors and low boost. it should be quite a big quicker than mid 12's once i work thru some of that stuff. i figure injectors and cam should allow me to turn it up over 500rwhp but that is not going to happen right away.

we had a little fun today. my hp tuners box took a crap so no tuning but we did make a couple of runs on the dyno just to see if it was safe to beat on the car.
stock should be in the 270-280rwhp range on a mustang dyno.
with a peek of 5psi it got 347hp/375tq
bumped it to 7psi and got to 375hp/400tq
both of those numbers were with very low timing. anywhere from 8deg down to 2deg so there should be a lot more power properly tuned. also the a/f ratio was low 11's and even into the high 10's so more power there too.
after we saw that it wasn't likely to blow up we went out on the street and ran it thru the gears. it seemed to like normal drive the best but was still shifting too high. power is falling off pretty hard up top. a combo of dropping boost up top and maybe the tiny exhaust? we were only at the 347hp setting when we went out for a spin.
seems like 400+rwhp should be easy with 7psi and tuning. i hope to get some mt's on there and get it tuned before next friday and then hit up the 1/8th.
car is VERY quiet. dyno tom said it was the quietest 375hp he has every heard

went out for a gtech run. stock showed 13.49. at the 5psi/347hp setting i now see 12.80.
thats a decent start. now add a proper tune, boost and tires.
i have to say it feels slow as fuck. needs at least another 200hp. with the tune and 7psi it should be over 400rwhp(mustang). maybe that will start feeling quick.
i am communicating with hp tuners to find out what is up with my box. they do respond pretty quick but i wish they had a phone number and live tech help. i might end up paying for another slot on someone elses cable just so i can get tuning on it. 2-8deg of timing has to be killing me.
parish8
08-28-2009, 12:24 AM
woohoo. car is running strong. it actually puts you back in the seat now. front end comes up a shit ton and i am still at 5psi on the street.
after about 15 runs at c&s dynoshop tom got it dialed in pretty good. the thing seems to hate timing at peek tq. tom thinks it could be my restrictive exhaust or tiny cam. timing ended up around 11deg at peek tq and 15deg at the top. anymore and it would show knock. car was tuned with hptuners and a lc1.
5psi was 375rwhp.
7.2psi was 419rwhp
mustang dyno, 3rd gear pulls(forgot 4th gives better numbers on these 6speed autos), no lock up.
on that 7.2psi run the injectors were maxed and the a/f ratio was headed up. this was in an 80deg shop. no way i car run that boost level on the street without larger injectors. maybe 6psi but only if i am watching the scan tool and it isn't too cool out.
i think the ~7psi will be fine with some injectors.... damn, more money i might have to spend before drag week :bandhead:  . those numbers seem decent to me considering stock cam and stock 2.25" exhaust with 5 mufflers.
i have some dyno video but dont plan on messing with it till after we go to the track tomorrow.

i could see lower 12's but 400hp isn't all that much in a 4000lb car. might need another mod or two before it gets into the 11's.
SLPGTP
08-28-2009, 07:48 AM
Yeah I figured. But I've seen some people's mod lists and they are running 12.5's. Shouldn't be much more than 400hp cuz they are uncammed. I'm hoping the car surprises you the first time out. Get a cam in that thing and you should be putting down some serious power. I've seen cars with cam, header, and a tune run around 420hp. You should come out to KRP Saturday. I'd love to see that thing.

car didn't run so well tonight. best run was 8.26 at 87 with a 2.03 60' (12.8's?)
5psi, 91octane fuel from bp, 11.5deg of timing at peek tq, 15deg at 6000rpm. a/f ratio in the mid to lower 11's.
no matter what we tried we still got knock retard. ran the fuel from high 10's up to low 12's. definately got more knock retard while in the low 12's. thought it might be heat soak from sitting in the staging lanes so we let it cool off a little and that didn't help.
last thing we did was put the timing to a flat 10deg up top and make a run. no knock. at least we are learning something. it appears to be real knock that the sensors are seeing.
question is... should we be able to run 5psi with 11.5-15deg of timing on 91 octane?
thinking a meth kit should be next, then a converter.

Do you think the knock might be from the DOD lifters?
like i said above when we pulled timing back to 10deg and all knock retard went away it makes me think the knock is real.
not really sure about anything and am open to ideas.
i am 99% sure the car is going to get a meth injection set up. should help with lots of things. i didn't want to spend any more money right now but as it sits it just isn't quick enough.

got some newer pics up. http://neufamily.org/images/g8gallery/
also a new dyno numbers and track times after the AIS meth kit.
http://neufamily.org/images/g8filespics/477hp779et.wmv << thats a big file. for those of you that would rather read about the results i will type them up.
best numbers before the meth were 419rwhp/411tq on a mustang dyno. we were fighting knock. injectors were 100% a/f ratio was climbing fast. a safer 5psi gave us 375rwhp but even with it tuned with plenty of fuel and low timing we were still fighting knock at the track.
after the meth we got it turned up to almost 10psi, 16deg of timing, no knock at all, a/f ratio in the lower 11's, injectors at 80%. the meth kit was an AIS system with the trunk mounted tank and progressive controler. 2 14gph nozzles and pump running full blast by 8psi.
new numbers... 477rwhp/504rwtq. this is on a mustang dyno.
at the track i had to work the shift points a ton. shifting at 5600, any sooner and it falls off hard. i suspect valve springs. 1-2 shift is now commander at 5100 to get it to shift at 5600.
best et was 7.79@95 with a lowly 1.99 60'. running at 9psi. there is more in it as it sits.
these numbers are with the stock 5 muffler exhaust, stock dod cam, stock converter, stock injectors.
complete list of mods are. hp tuners with 2 bar os, lc1, twin 60mm turbos, 265/40/18 dr's on stock rims, AIS meth kit.

Parish, it looks like the nozzles are located directly across from eachother on the nipple? (90 & 270 degrees) Is it ideal to have them like that and not seperated from eachother?

Parish.. Are those the new Billet Precison units? If so, you aren't anywhere near the peak efficiency range for those things. It needs more boost! ;)

we are on drag week with the 67 wagon we built and the g8. g8 is doing well.
11.95@122 on sunday 9psi
11.90@122 on monday 9psi
11.87@122 on tuesday 10psi
11.44@124.5 on wedsday 10.5psi
11.87@122 on thursday 9psi
wedsday was at summit track. that place kicks ass. it was also perfect weather and i did the syty shuffle to help with the 60'. still only a 1.92 on that day so there is another easy .2 right there.
still stock cam, converter, 5 muffler exhaust. thinking exhaust, valve springs, a 3rd meth nozzle and then a little more boost will be the next mods.

Thanks.
pull up to the line and stage(both lights). put it in neutral. push the brakes hard. give the engine a good rev. brake pedal will sink farthur and you end up with more brake force than normal.
put it back in gear, then floor it while holding the brakes, wait till there is some boost and then let it go.
