Congrats! I'd definitely say wait until you're all done with all of your initial training and schooling. You'll have time to bring your vehicle to your first duty station. Unless you're anything but infantry I wouldn't even bother until you get back from your first tour. Cause I guarantee you're going to the suck soon. But if you're gonna be in the states then bring your car out and research research and research anything you do.

Dont do what all the other marines do while in A school. Blow all their money on alcohol and useles "tapout" and other wannabe clothing. PLEASE dont do this. Save it all, possibly buy a laptop or something.

Well, as a former Staff Sergeant I would suggest that you wait until you get to your final duty station (done with SOI (or MCT, depending on MOS) and your schools after that. I highly doubt you'll be headed overseas soon, but it also depends on your MOS (what is it?).
As an E-1/E-2, remember, you're not making a whole lot of money, and it is most wise to pump as much as possible into your TSP (thrift savings plan) because compound interest is your friend .... with that in mind, make your purchase once you've gotten to your final duty station.

Go to college too, dont follow the crowd by getting into the typical stuff like excessive alcohol and blowing every cent on a car. Take the education opportunities the military will give you, make yourself better and stand out from your peers. Good luck and congrats on making it through the boot camp.

Are you kidding me? The TSP is/was a joke man. No offense but everyone that I knew that dumped money into that scammed got screwed one way or another... :eek2:

I would wait until you get to your first Permanent Duty station... Then once you get deployed you can come home and dump a chunk of change into it. Good luck with watever you decide...Semper Fi

OORAH! Congrats on the graduation. I waited til after my Afghan pump before dropping cash on my Z. I would highly recommend waiting until after your first deployment before buying a vehicle. And when you do, go as far from a military installation as you can!

I agree with saving the money and/or letting it earn interest. I see too many people get out of basic/tech school with money for the first time in their lives and then blowing it all on stupid shit.
In San Antonio there are tons of scams to prey on the brand new people. Dealerships selling cars at 20% interest and hot chicks selling shitty laptops and such at mall kiosks...
Just had someone with less than a year in get kicked out. 18 years old and had to take out 2 emergency loans because he wasted his money on stupid things. Now he is living back with his parents with nothing to show for himself.
Definitely wait till you get SETTLED at your duty station and find out what your living arrangements/lifestyle is before you waste your money.

I didn’t get mine until I made staff (AF) and had it on for two years and had a house. I'm in ND so a sports car isn't a practical DD. think about your location and if it doesn’t work as a dd get a beater or a nice reasonably priced car and wait until it is a good time for you. Biggest thing to remember is you wear your pay on your sleeve. Maybe you’re not out on your own for the first time but real life has just started for you. I had a family emergency and had to go back home for a funeral and spent everything I had in savings. Fell behind a month on my truck and had to take out a loan to cover the truck payment. It took me six months to get rid of a loan I didn’t think I would have to take. Moral of the story is you can’t be ready for everything but if you have something saved you will be better prepared.
How is tsp so bad? It’s about the same as a 401K. The market crashed and everyone lost something.
