Tools & Fabrication - your opinion on kobalt boxes

whats your opinion on them, as to holding up well loaded with tools, im looking at the 56in double decker at lowes, ya its got that fridge and stereo crap deal but i like the top cause you can open it up and lay your tools out and what you need for the job, i know they are made my matco but for the price of the kobalt and size id rather buy this one then buying a matco 4s box for the same price and have much smaller box. Just throw you opinions out there and what you think of them!

I've got a Kobalt box at home. I love it. Absolutely no complaints. I like the stainless finish personally. I just bought some of that stainless magic stainless steel cleaner and I spray it down about once a week. Looks great! I've had Matco boxes and while they are a little nicer it's not lightyears. I think I paid about $1K for mine vs $4K for the Matco... Very good deal I think.

No, there's not. Not for home use anyways. If I was still working in a dealership like I was while in school, I'd probably spring for the Snap On/Matco box, but home usage, for me anyways, isn't nearly as hard on my tools/toolbox.

I've got the mid size top and bottom (41 or 42 inch) and I think it's pretty kickass. My only complaint is that the drawers have a tendency to want to slide back in, and my garage floor is pretty damn level, so I'm not sure what's up with that. Maybe not quite the quality of the high end tool boxes, but more than adequate for the weekend warrior. That big box with the fridge is pimptastic...wish i had room in my garage.

I guess it all depends on the model, my buddy has a Kobalt and me a Craftsman. The Kobalt is cheap and flimsy in comparison and it's not a top of the line craftsman box either. The ball bearing one, not sure if the Kobalt model has bearings or not but I would not buy it. Compare prices and do a little shopping to see if it matches something else in that price range.

i might get flamed for this but id take a hard look at those harbor freight Snap-on knock-off boxes people have been talking about.
the kobalt and craftsman boxes seem like toys compared to the HF boxs and its about half the price similiar equiped. the only thing that they have on the HF boxes IMO is being stainless but for me thats no big deal.
as nice as the fridge is, im a serious wrencher and need any inch of space for my tools in the garage.

I'm with you there, I need a decent sized bottom box right now, I've got tools on rolling carts and rolling seats :jest: and I'm all about saving money on tool boxes. I'll check them out for sure.

When I checked out Lowes a while ago, I didn't really like the boxes. Seemed to not have enough space and the drawers were a little hard to pull out.

I own a kobolt one and a harbor freight one and the harbor frieght one has alot more space and i think its actually better made personally plus you can had on extra draws on the side or a locker or both which i seem to like yea its no snap on but for few hundrad bucks you arnt goin get a better deal.

My girlfriends dad has a Kobalt box. Its the one with the speakers/fridge/lights in it. The only complaint about it is that when the drawers are fully loaded and extended it can tip forward. It might just be the weight of what he has in those drawers, but its something to be aware of.

well guys i bought my box today, since im in school i get a special student pricing so i bought a Snap On classic 78 box in chevy orange i got for 1500 so i think i got it for a good price hence that it goes for 4200 bucks on the snap on website

I have a few of the smaller Kobalt boxes, I like the
stackable "mid" ones especially. They feel a lot
better (solidity and slides) than the other Craftsman
and Waterloo chests I have.

I have a 28" Kobalt ball bearing box with the upper, lower, and mid sections. I have to say that it has held up great, and still looks brand new. I have since bought a couple of Craftsman ball bearing 40" boxes. After using both for a while now I can say that it is nice having the deeper drawers of the Craftsman (probably has more to do with the larger size box than the brand), but the Kobalt slides and latches are super nice.

Excellent choice. I would recommend getting the stainless top for it, especially if you're getting that steep of a discount. I wouldn't trade anything for my classic 96 w/ stainless top.

My dad has the Kobalt you were looking at and he loves it. It feels pretty solid and the drawers open really smooth even with heavy tools in them. He hasn't had the problem with it trying to tip.

What the, how did you get it for 1500? My school has the same exact one for $2500.

The 53" ones are around $1500 for me.

If you're going to buy any box that is not snap on, matco, mac or the like why are you even looking at anything other then harbor freight?

From what I've read and seen the HF box is a good buy and now listed at $399 and a 20% coupon it makes it cheap for the snap on copy.For box,top chest it can be had for less than $500 and side box only puts it around $750.
