How can I do that? Can I just go back home, and get a sticker off any base?

i'm PCS'ing to Vandenberg in Dec. i'm a ND resident w/ND plates & no emission laws in ND. i've been told as long as i am active duty and stay ND, i dont have to comply with CA emission / exhaust laws and CA can not enforce laws from other states. remember now, catalytic converters are federal and they can issue tickes and fines for not having them. i'm gambling on what i've been told, but i'm putting a Loudmouth2 on my turbo because right now with as loud as it is with no cats and just the turbo...... i'll do what ever i can to keep on the down low

I know about anywhere else but here at Edwards AFB CA it don't matter where your car is registered it has to be SMOGed. It was required to reg the car on base. If I were you I would call ahead so you can prepare yourself. California "shouldn't" mess with you being an out of state car, but I would also check local laws.

I've been talking about this with my chain of command and so far it seems that for what my car has, it shouldn't be a problem. Again this is the daily driver TA not the turbo'd Camaro.

my buddy and my future supervisor, both say Vandyland has no base registration ... still, it's free to make a phone call

Again check with the local laws better safe than sorry. Messing with emissions LT headers, cats is federal law from my understanding. No military figure is going to overrule the law. Some states enforce standards some don't but California is one of those states that do. And yes if a cop suspects your car is not in complyance he can check under your hood. Has it happen, yes it has I heard the stories. Can they do anything to an out of state person who knows.

Idk if they can mess with you for like EGR/AIR but as stated cats are federal law so they can for that.
If your stationed in CA you must have CA smog to get a base decal to drive your car on base. If you live of base get it registered back home and don't drive it on base. There are also ways around this smog thing but it will cost you.
Also as long as your cats and AIR/EGR are still intact OP just find a smog place that will overlook visual and you will pass

Why would you have to get a CA base decal? I'd think that any other base sticker would suffice.
We don't know where we are going yet, but I'm going to be pissed if we get sent on the west coast or Hawaii

If you already have a decal use that until it runs out.
Yeah I tried to stay away from the west coast put all east coast bases on dream sheet so much for that.

The whole idea of having to get your car smogged just to get a Base sticker even though your car is registered out of state is ri-f*ckin'-diculous. I'm just glad that Beale no longer requires those stickers any more.

yeah technically :secret2: your suppose to have your car smogged in california to keep your vehicle registered out of state its an agreement the governor and the military have .. yeah its pretty dumb and some bases like 29 palms make you change your base decals if you are permanent personnel on the base so make sure whatever base you are going to doesnt do the same ...

Reject, when I was out there it wasn't a problem. Only thing base cared about was current insurance with your name as the primary driver, current (in my case Texas) Registration and Inspection Stickers...I knew guys that were on a Ins. policy with parents still and were not listed as primary driver on the vehicle, but base let it slide as long as they were on the insurance. Like others said cats are federal so that they can mess with you on that one (no one on base ever looked). I didn't hear about them (civilians) messing with guys with long tubes (stock location of cats issue)... I did hear about that a couple of times here on Tech, but it was always civilians...they were probably acting dumb to begin with and the officer was throwing the book at them...
That was in 04, and I'm sure things have changed slightly. If I'm not mistaken if it was older than 10 years, then it was required to be smogged to get a base registration sticker... had a buddy get flagged as a "gross polluter" on a mid-70's Camaro.... you don't want to be marked as a gross polluter.... it really sucked for him. (I'm sure you wont have that problem...just saying).
Call up base registration (I think that's who handles it....memory is crap anymore) and ask for the requirements for base registration and read through them....
